I am enrolling a new student and when I clicked auto-assign lunch ID, that field populated with the number 0. It should populate a randomly generated 4-digit number. I've never seen this happen before and not sure what caused it or how to fix. TIA for any advice.

I tested a few things out, and it is worth noting that there are a few variables here. I went down a rabbit hole, so this has a bit more for anyone new to this.
Several student pages allow you to auto-assign IDs and passwords, but what that function does depends on the page you are on and your settings on the ‘Assign IDs and Passwords’ page. You can get to that page in two ways, and will need to have students selected for it to work.
OR
The Assign ID settings you have will determine what the function does, but it ALSO depends on the page you are on.
If you are on the Modify Info page, then it will only assign the lunch ID, but the box has to be checked to assign lunch ID, or it will not do anything. I’m guessing that this was your issue the first time, it happened to me as well.
***Parent and student access accounts will NOT be assigned if you are on the Modify Info page, even if those options are selected on the Assign IDs page.
If you want to assign parent and student access IDs and passwords, you must do it from the Guardian and Student Access page, and it will use the settings you have on the Assign IDs page.
***Assigning IDs on the Guardian and Student Access page will not assign a lunch ID, even if the student’s lunch ID is blank.
For a new student, it makes more sense to use the Assign IDs and Passwords page so it will assign all IDs and access at one time, then you can be sure of what the settings are. But then you’d still need to look at two separate pages to see what it did.
This is confusing and not intuitive. But now that you have your ‘Assign ID’ settings the way you want, it will remember that until you change them, and these rarely need to be changed once you get it dialed in.
Depending on how you do your lunch ID, and whether it is based on their ID, you may want to clear out the lunch IDs for graduated students. I personally like short lunch IDs. 😊
