One of the upcoming changes for the Summer OASIS is how the graduation cohort will be collected. It will now be in the format of ‘first year in ninth grade’ entered as ‘yyyy-yyyy’. Previously, it was collected as the 4-digit year of graduation. But for those of you who have been around long enough will remember cohort was first collected was a Y/N field in the 2010 Summer OASIS 😂

In thinking about how to keep track of graduation cohort, a debate has come up about whether to set it by hand or let PowerSchool calculate it by looking at enrollment records.

Do you track graduation cohort by entering the first year in 9th grade on the State/Province page, or do you leave that field blank and let the report calculate it for you and fill it in by hand for any transfer students who weren’t enrolled with you for 9th grade?

I had to go looking. This field is filled out for all out students in grades 9-12.
If asked "Why?", I would guess:
AK Data Validation has a rule that finds students in grades 9-12 with a blank 'First9grade' field or no 9th grade enrollment record. I can envision Past Chad making a rule to fill this field out for all students in order to avoid it ever being an error.
We have a number of SQL reports that pull Cohort information.
Filling it out is part of the New Student Checklist our Registrar follows.
I do not trust Powerschool's ability to math correctly.

I second:   I do not trust Powerschool's ability to math correctly.

I'm in favor of manually adding that information into the First9grade field..
