Beware of Phishing Emails

Hello Fellow AK PSUG Members,

Today Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District was part of an orchestrated email based phishing attempt on our staff. It came from outside our organization, but users within our district have inadvertently helped it spread.

The initially compromised account was that our of Interim Superintendent. This account has since been quarantined and we're continuing to run system audits looking for additional compromised accounts.
If anyone in your organization receives an email with attachments or links from KGBSD, I suggest you verify via phone or other non-email method that the owner of the account sent you the attachment

Thanks for the warning!  We use a training website called KnowBe4 so we are all pretty good at identifying phishing emails!

Of all the phishing attacks I've seen, this one was pretty good. I could see people falling for it unless they're extra vigilant as it appeared to be legit. We received one of the emails in Craig. In looking at the original header, it came from the actual school email and was sent through a SERRC Google group. One of my compliance rules caught it, initially I thought it was a false positive as the message didn't seem phishy but the PDF looks blurred and says to open in Acrobat Reader, if you do, it asks if you trust a domain for a hotel in Ghana. 🚨 so I called KTN but wasn't sure how far it had spread. Thanks Chad for sending out a warning, hope it's all working out over there and hasn't spread too far.
