For those in favor of briefly knowing what was discussed in the public lecture.

Emilio Ambasz - Green Over Grey

Not a little while ago did I come from an exciting lecture by the famous architect Mr. Emilio Ambasz. I remember two years back in the class of History of Architecture 4: Contemporary Architecture, when Dr. Jihad revealed the slide that followed Norman Foster to look at the name Emilio Ambasz and his architecture and told us that this architect is known for green buildings, I thought to myself.. Where is the building? I only see a green surface. Little did I know that the building was covered by this clean green surface.

Prof. Ambasz. (Need I to point out that he earned his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in only a year!!! and is a winning industrial designer) spoke today about different projects of his, and their approaches. Green over Grey, appears to be the principal thought.

The following are some quotes of which I liked describing his philosophical approach:

- In my work I search to give architecture work something primal, of an essential passionate level… It has to be durable.

- Celebrate thought and sensation. The ideal gesture is to arrive to a land that is welcomed. Assume a boat with a magical space, not harsh of any sort.

- In a perfect nature we would need no houses at all.

- Find the root of the problem, the essence, once you experience it you can understand many other things that may not be directed of concern at that moment.

- Architecture is full of potentials, it is essential, not like a feather, it is precise like a bird.

- The building is a scar, no question.

- I am running around, I am free, but I have a collar around my neck tied by a chain. I am a child of my time.

- We have created a second man made nature and gave it to the given nature. It is a task that goes beyond the architect.

- I still believe that we need to create a new type of institute to moderate a new type of thought. If we make an image in architecture, an image that wont move the heart. What is the point of it?

- Shadows are still looking for their bodies. It is a state that does not constitute the conceptual state of reality.

- Reflection of the culture, represents the present of the culture. There is a technique in the hot climates where cooling is done, old techniques which have been lost can be recovered.

I think that the greatest misfortune arrive when the work arrives before the image.

- Create symbols with images, lets call them prototypes. The artist does not know what they meant, but then there are different potential interpretation. They are just enriched. Then the prototype becomes a type, and it is used then the observers use it and it becomes a stereotype.

- When I design I have an image, I did not think. The only think that I wanted to do is to integrate the house into the landscape. I do not use words when I think; it creates a state of negativeness. I think we use words because we are afraid of creating images. Later I turn it into a system.

- In images there are potential, and a set of answers, not one answer.

Jihad, what did you expect from a student like maryam ? :-). It was a pleasure to read this mail showing the virus of architecture which conquers you if you are not afraid. Keep it in your blood maryam, no medicine will help. As wolf prix from coop himmelblau said : architecture must burn.

Thank you Maryam for this report.
Did you attent the AUPC ( Ajman Urban Planning Conference 2010), because Mr.Embasz presented the same projects and buildings and in parallel with that conference we had an exhibition of some architects ( among them Ambasz, Nicoletti, Architecture Studio, Frederic Schwarz,etc.).
It is always with a great pleasure to attend a lecture given by such Architects and through them I do confirm what I already said in different conferences and in my last book published in february 2012 and entitled: TOWARDS A RESPONSIVE ENVIRONMENT.
Certainly NOT ALL THE BUILDINGS ARE ARCHITECTURE, and the same for the difference between the type and the model or the prototype as it was developed first by Quatermere De Quincy who was the first whom made the difference between Type and Model and later on Abbe Laugier in his three volumes on the theory of the Classical Architecture who talked about the prototypes in Architecture when he was describing the TEMPLE OF SALAMON.
Architecture is not just the activity of building. This is certainly true because man is an intellectual orgainsm, he vividly employs all his capacities to produce all kinds of artefacts that convey meanings and imply cultural dimensions.
The task of an architect is not just suggesting some interesting spatial organizations but more than this there is a message which it had been qualified by Mr.Ambasz as the essence, and among our tasks is to think about the maintenance of our buildings which lead me to highlight the financial issue in a way how does it cost: most of Mr.Ambasz's projects ( including those already built) appear to be costly, and I do agree that they are costly if I have to see the price per M2 in terms of material, labors and techniques but if I take into consideration the maintenance of the building in the medium or long terms ( bearing in mind that through the time"after 10 years", the cost of the maintennance might be seen as an exponential function), I will say that the cost is just reasonable.

Thank you Dr. Jihad, Mr. Michael and Mrs. Sawsan. It is the least I could do.
Thank you Dr. Buzaid, you never fail to captivate our attention and give us some keywords to look up further more. I hadn't know that type in architecture was discussed by theorists and critics. Thanks again.

Thank you Maryam.
Just for your information, one of the Characteristics of the so called Italian School is based on the relation between the typology of buildings and urban morphology.
I will mention just architects ( Academics whom wrote about type) , the list is far from being exhaustive:
Tony Veydler ( see particularly his articles published in the magazine OPPOSITION);
Carlao Aymonino;
Aldo Rossi;
Murratori;
Canniga;
Phillip Pannerai;
Jean Castex
Nicolas Pevsner particularly his book : The history of building type (Available in our library)
These are some authors from the mid of the last Century.
You may see also:
Durand when he presented the different types of buildings particularly : Theatre, Hospital, Library.
Regards
