Dear Grad-students,
Dear Colleagues (thats your new term from now on),
the presentation of your projects yesterday was another outstanding event at our Department. The quality of your work showed again a huge improvement in the work of our students. The jurors had been impressed, many of them stayed in the hall after finishing the juries to see those projects they did not judge on. I left app. 1.5 hours after the last Jury was done, some jurors stayed which showed their interest in your Architecture.
From the view of an Instructor.
Retrospective to the semester and the desk crits i felt sometimes like a Jockey on a horse in a 2.100 m race. In the beginning, the first lecture, the horse waits in the box for the start. It horbs, sometimes it kicks and its nervous. Its full of power and Adrenaline and wants to show what is was trained for, in our case, in the last 4.5 years. The doors open and the horse wants one thing only : run. The jockey knows the distance and its his job to keep the horse with a comfortable speed in the race. During the race the jockey recalls everything the horse had learned in is training sessions. Step by Step. He has to prevent the horse to loose all his power in the first 1.500 m and then to fall back behind its own abilities. The horse goes steadily in the field which is his/her own ablities. At 1.500 m the jockey loosens a little bit the rein, the horse has enough power to increase its speed. Not to much. At 1.700 m, which was in my section the week before the prefinal, the horse gets 80 % free. At 1.900 m the Jockey lets the horse run alone. No more control, the Jockey is a passenger. This was after prefinal. The horse gets free from all reins, it takes all its power, concentrates and is doing only one thing. Running, Running, Running. Very often in important races, it surpasses all its performances in former races, the body gets very, very long and stretched. Crossing the finishing line the horse is exhausted, its done. When now looking into the eyes of the horse you can see something wonderful. The eyes are clear, they show happiness and proudness. It has a very light tread even its still exhausted. The horse is the star. It overcame its own restrictions, it learned nothing is impossible when overcoming its doubts in the own performance.
Wishing you all the best for the long long race which is ahead of you. Whether you decide to go on racing or to change to another stable, the private one. With green gras, fresh water, foals and someone who takes care together with you for this private stable in whatever position. Both is more then worth to live. From today on you are the Jockey.
May God bless you, you are a wonderful generation.
Your colleague
