In January 2012, I experimented with porting the ajaximrpg backend from PHP to Node.js.  This experiment was successful: within a few weeks, I had a buggy but working Node.js backend.

In March 2012, I officially decided to develop and support both PHP and Node.js backends for ajaximrpg.  The PHP backend would be the lightweight, easy-to-host solution.  The Node.js backend would be a high-performance alternative.

During my experiments with Node.js and PHP, I discovered a lot of interesting porting techniques, enough such that it would make an interesting technical book.  I decided to put ajaximrpg development on hold and write a book for O'Reilly Media .  It took the entire summer to write the book and up through November to edit it.  But, the book is finally done, out and available.

Node.js for PHP Developers: Porting PHP to Node.js by Daniel Howard

Towards the end of 2012, Joshua Gross also agreed to let me take over maintenance of Ajax IM, the parent project of ajaximrpg.  To that end, I made Ajax IM minimally work on the latest Node.js version and checked that into GitHub.

For 2013, I plan to set up a server so I can take over hosting the Ajax IM web site from Joshua.  Then, I plan to finish development and release ajaximrpg 5.10 which will contain both the PHP and Node.js backends.  For Ajax IM itself, I plan to maintain it and keep it functional.
