User doesn't appear until a character is typed

Is there a setting somewhere that controls this behavior?

A user joins the chat, but the user doesn't appear in the user list, or see the chat messages until at least one character is typed and sent by the user.  Then, the user sees everything.

I'm using ajax chat 0.8.8 standalone under Fedora 31.
