With a background in the supplement industry, and a handful of hair problems (literally handfuls of hair coming out in my shower) after a bad dye job, I was shocked to find that the hair supplements on the market were lacking the ingredients I craved as well as the scientific studies to back them. I had to take 12 pills a day to get the results I was looking for.

Hair Love is a 2019 American independent animated short film[1]directed by Matthew A. Cherry, Everett Downing Jr., and Bruce W. Smith, and written by Cherry. It follows the story of a man who must do his daughter's hair for the first time, and features Issa Rae as the voice of the mother. The film was produced after a 2017 Kickstarter campaign, and was also released as a children's book in May 2019 with illustrations by Vashti Harrison. Hair Love received generally positive reviews and won Best Animated Short Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. A spin-off TV series titled Young Love was ordered by Max in July 2020 and premiered on September 21, 2023.[2][3][4][5]
Seven-year-old Zuri unsuccessfully attempts to style her hair using a hair tutorial video made by her mother, Angela. Her father, Stephen, tries to style her hair himself and fails, upsetting Zuri. Zuri and Stephen then watch the video together and pull off the style. They enter a hospital room where her mother is wearing a scarf and sitting in a wheelchair. She removes her scarf to reveal that her head is completely bald, the result of chemotherapy for cancer. The family members hug each other and return home together.
In 2017, Cherry created a Kickstarter campaign for a short animated film called Hair Love. The film is about an African American dad who is attempting to style his young daughter Zuri's hair for the first time.[8] The campaign surpassed its initial goal of $75,000 and raised over $300,000. According to Kickstarter, that exceeds the amount raised by any other short film project on the platform.[8] He co-directed the film with Everett Downing and Bruce W. Smith, with Peter Ramsey and Pixar animator Frank Abney serving as executive producers.[9] The film was co-produced with Karen Rupert Toliver, whom Cherry approached for help.[6]
On March 20, 2019, Sony Pictures Animation announced that they had picked up Hair Love, which was slated to be released theatrically later that year.[8] Hair Love was storyboarded in Toon Boom Storyboard Pro and animated in Toon Boom Harmony by Mondo Media under their 6 Point Harness label.[10]
Hair Love was first shown in theaters alongside The Angry Birds Movie 2 on August 14, 2019,[11] and was uploaded to YouTube four months later on December 5.[12] The short was eventually attached to later prints of Jumanji: The Next Level beginning on January 24, 2020,[13] and by the following month was also attached to screenings of Little Women.[14] The film was also adapted into a children's book, written by Cherry and illustrated by artist Vashti Harrison, which was released by Dial Books on May 14, 2019.[15] The book was on the New York Times Book Review Children's Best Sellers list.[16]
On July 7, 2020, the streaming service Max ordered a 12-episode animated series titled Young Love with Cherry and Carl Jones serving as showrunners, to be produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Blue Key Entertainment and Lion Forge Animation. Issa Rae reprises her role as the mother, while Kid Cudi voices Stephen.[17] The series premiered on September 21, 2023.[18][5][19]

So it can grow and thrive in some things where people might be asking, wow, Jeb, you had braids in your hair one day. And now you have it in twists, or now you have it in puffs, or you have it out natural as a little mini Afro a TWA. And there are some things that we love to change it up. We love to change our hairstyles. But we also know that it takes a lot of care and patience with our hair. And I think educators can use this book to show all of our kids the different styles in the BIPOC community with our hair and our natural hair care. But it also shows the importance of how we value our hair.

What made you choose the medium of animation for Hair Love rather than make a live action film?
I had the idea for the animation for a couple of years. I felt that animation is more of a universal platform, in that they tend to reach the widest audiences. Because they are more family-oriented and have a universal theme, and that no matter the subject, race, sex, age, religion, they appeal to everybody. With the Hair Love project, our leads are African-American, so I felt that it would be a more universal concept if we did it in the animation world.

To help fund the project, Cherry went to Kickstarter and began a campaign as he previously did for his two indie films. He says these campaigns aren't just about financing the projects but also about building a fan base and allowing "people who may want to be involved or kind of see the project through to help out."
As audiences have been introduced to Zuri and Stephen, they've seen the father's struggle in trying to groom his daughter's hair and have been able to relate. Cherry says one of the biggest things he has heard in response from those who have seen the short is about the representation it provides.
"When we did this campaign two years ago, there wasn't a lot of representation in animated projects," Cherry says. "You know, oftentimes they would cast actors of color, but, you know, they'd be playing inanimate objects or animals. And, you know, it was rarely, like, actually seeing a family dynamic in animation."
"I think it does also a lot for young people's confidence when they see themselves represented," Cherry says. "You know, media is so powerful. And when you grow up and see magazine covers and TV shows and movies and you don't see yourself represented, but you see every other type of hairstyle represented, that can really affect your self-confidence."
"We really get a bad rap in mainstream media, particularly black fathers," he says. "There's always the stereotype that we're not present or deadbeats. ... And while obviously those situations do exist, it feels very much so that it's just like disproportionately represented in that way."
"I have a lot of friends that are young fathers, and they're all willing to do whatever it takes for their young girls," he says. "This was just kind of me put[ting] myself in their shoes and kind of representing and also really being inspired by all these viral videos of dads doing their daughter's hair and people just really being fascinated by that."
"I had my hair long enough to where it could be braided," he says. "Every week I'd have to go and get it worked on and stuff. So, you know, I think for both men and women, it's definitely something that's a big part of our life."
I personally like this film because it brings me a different perspective on a father. It makes me realize that not all dads are the same. I also love it because it reminds me of my own mother and how she used to do my hair. I loved it and those small moments made me think about myself with my mom. I would definitely recommend it.
