Xively egg updated at versus sensor reading times?

I see that each datastream (NO2, CO, etc.) have datapoints which have timestamps but the egg devices themselves also have an "updated" attribute which doesnt seem to be when the last time the sensor reading was recorded by Xively. Does anyone know what triggers the "updated" attribute to be set?
