This is the final call to invite you to apply for the AIROYoung Dissertation Award 2025.
If you completed your PhD at an Italian university after July 1, 2024, or if you have your thesis defense planned before May 31, 2025, you can apply by April 30.

“AIROYoung Dissertation Award ” 2025
AIROYoung (AY) bandisce il premio “AIROYoung Dissertation Award ” 2025 per le migliori tesi di dottorato discusse o da dover discutere in ambito Ricerca Operativa presso un’Università italiana nel periodo 1 luglio 2024 – 31 maggio 2025.
PROCESSO DI SELEZIONE, VALUTAZIONE
E PRESENTAZIONE DELLE TESI FINALISTE
Per valutare le candidature che saranno ricevute, AY individuerà giurate e giurati esterni al proprio board (attuale e precedente).
In particolare, il processo di selezione sarà articolato nelle seguenti tre fasi:
Un primo comitato di revisori si occuperà di effettuare una valutazione preliminare delle tesi di dottorato. Per ogni tesi, due revisori creeranno ognuno un report motivante un punteggio di massimo 85 punti, secondo i criteri indicati qui di seguito:
Pertinenza dell’argomento/i della tesi (massimo 15 punti)
Contributo scientifico (massimo 35 punti)
Impatto e interdisciplinarietà (massimo 25 punti)
Qualità della scrittura (massimo 10 punti)
Sulla base degli stessi criteri, un secondo comitato riceverà i report di tutti i revisori per poter confrontare tutte le tesi tra loro complessivamente, fare una valutazione comparativa delle pubblicazioni tratte dalla tesi (dando un massimo di 15 punti), e ottenendo così una valutazione definitiva ed una graduatoria. Al più le prime quattro tesi della graduatoria saranno nominate finaliste e accederanno alla sessione speciale che si terrà durante la prossima edizione dell’International Conference on Optimization and Decision Science (ODS 2025).
Durante la sessione speciale a ODS 2025, un terzo comitato valuterà la presentazione di ogni tesi finalista, assegnando ad ogni candidato fino a 10 punti tenendo in considerazione anche le capacità espositive e comunicative.
ANNUNCIO DELLA TESI VINCITRICE
La tesi che avrà ottenuto il punteggio complessivo più alto sarà dichiarata vincitrice e annunciata durante ODS 2025.
In caso di parità, la tesi vincitrice sarà quella che avrà ottenuto il punteggio più alto al termine del secondo round. In caso di ulteriore parità, si avrà un ex aequo e il premio sarà suddiviso.
REQUISITI DI PARTECIPAZIONE
Per poter partecipare, è necessario:
avere discusso o discutere una tesi di dottorato attinenti alla Ricerca Operativa tra il 01/07/2024 e il 31/05/2025 presso un’Università italiana;
essere membri AIRO per l’anno solare 2025 o 2026 (si ricorda che la partecipazione a ODS 2024 e a ODS 2025 garantiscono rispettivamente l’iscrizione ad AIRO per il 2025 e il 2026).
Si noti che la mancata iscrizione a ODS 2025 al momento della partecipazione al bando non rappresenta un criterio di esclusione. La presentazione delle tesi finaliste nella sessione dedicata a ODS 2025 sarà però obbligatoria. Al fine di organizzare al meglio la sessione, i finalisti non ancora iscritti a ODS 2025 verranno contattati direttamente dal board di AIROYoung.
MODALITÀ DI PARTECIPAZIONE
La domanda di partecipazione dovrà essere inviata compilando il seguente Google Form:

Deadline per poter partecipare: 30 aprile 2025.
Nello specifico, oltre ai dati anagrafici e a un recapito di contatto, chiunque vorrà candidarsi dovrà allegare i seguenti documenti (tutti in formato PDF):
una copia della tesi di dottorato;
un riassunto della tesi (in inglese; dimensione font: 11pt; lunghezza massima: 5 pagine, riferimenti bibliografici esclusi);
una copia del proprio curriculum vitae (in inglese);
un certificato che testimoni l’avvenuta discussione, o un documento redatto da (almeno) uno dei docenti relatori che indichi la data prevista per la discussione della tesi, che non potrà essere successiva al 31 maggio 2025.
se ve n'è almeno una, una copia di ogni pubblicazione estratta dalla tesi (le pubblicazioni non pertinenti al contenuto della tesi non verranno prese in considerazione dai revisori);
una prova dell’iscrizione ad AIRO per l’anno solare 2025 o per il 2026, come:
il certificato di partecipazione alla conferenza ODS 2024 (la quota di registrazione alla conferenza includeva infatti la quota associativa ad AIRO per il 2025);
la ricevuta di iscrizione alla conferenza ODS 2025 (inclusiva della quota di registrazione ad AIRO per il 2026);
la ricevuta del versamento fatto ad AIRO per diventare membro nel 2025.
PREMIO
Ogni persona finalista riceverà un attestato. La persona vincitrice riceverà inoltre un corrispettivo in denaro pari a 500 €. In caso di ex aequo, tale premio verrà suddiviso a metà.

Call for Applications for the Ph.D. Thesis
“AIROYoung Dissertation Award ” 2025
AIROYoung (AY) announces the “AIROYoung Dissertation Award ” 2025 for the best doctoral thesis discussed in Operations Research at an Italian university during the period July 1, 2024 – May 31, 2025.
PROCESS OF SELECTION, EVALUATION,
AND PRESENTATION OF THE FINALIST THESES
To evaluate the applications received, AY will identify jurors external to its board (current and previous).
In particular, the selection process will be divided into the following three phases:
A first committee of reviewers will conduct a preliminary evaluation of the doctoral theses. For each thesis, two reviewers will each create a report justifying a score of up to 85 points according to the criteria indicated below:
Pertinence of the thesis topic(s) (maximum 15 points)
Scientific contribution (maximum 35 points)
Impact and interdisciplinarity (maximum 25 points)
Writing quality (maximum 10 points)
Based on the same criteria, a second committee will receive all the reports of all the reviewers to compare all the theses overall and provide a comparative score for the publications taken from the thesis (with a 15-point maximum), thus obtaining a definitive evaluation and a ranking. At most, the first four theses in the ranking will be named finalists and will access the special session to be held during the next edition of the International Conference on Optimization and Decision Science (ODS 2025).
During the special session at ODS 2025, a third committee will evaluate the presentation of the finalist theses, awarding up to 10 points to each candidate, also considering its presentation and communication skills.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNING THESIS
The thesis receiving the highest overall score will be declared the winner and will be announced during ODS 2025.
In case of a tie, the winning thesis will be the one that obtained the highest score at the end of the second round. In case of a further tie, there will be an ex aequo, and the prize will be divided.
PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
To be able to participate, you must:
Have discussed a doctoral thesis on Operations Research topics between 01/07/2024 and 31/05/2025 at an Italian university;
Be an AIRO member for the calendar year 2025 or 2026. Having participated in ODS 2024 or being registered to ODS 2025 grants automatic AIRO membership for the year 2025 or 2026, respectively.
Not being registered for ODS 2025 when the application is submitted does not represent an exclusion criterion from the call. However, in-presence presentations for the finalists during ODS 2025 will be mandatory. To effectively organise the session, the finalists not already registered for ODS 2025 will be directly contacted by the AIROYoung board.

Specifically, in addition to personal data and a contact address, anyone wishing to apply must attach the following documents (all in PDF format):
A copy of the doctoral thesis;
A summary of the thesis (in English; font-size: 11pt; maximum length: 5 pages, bibliographical references excluded);
A copy of their curriculum vitae (in English);
A certificate of successful thesis defense, or a document from (at least) one supervisor indicating the scheduled defense date, which must be no later than May 31, 2025.
If any, a copy of each publication taken from the thesis (publications that do not pertain to the thesis content will not be taken into consideration by the reviewers);
A proof of the AIRO membership for the calendar year 2025 or 2026, such as:
the certificate of participation in the ODS 2024 conference (the registration fee for the conference included the AIRO membership fee for 2025);
the registration receipt for the ODS 2025 conference (the registration fee for the conference includes the AIRO membership fee for 2026);
the receipt of the payment made to AIRO to become a member in 2025.
AWARD
Each finalist will receive a certificate. The winning person will also receive a cash prize of € 500. In case of an ex aequo, the prize will be divided in half.
