First things first, Spirit Airlines allows you to travel with many pets on domestic flights and in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, but not on international flights.
However, pets can only be carried in the cabin and not as checked cargo. This means that only small pets that can fit under the seat in front of you are allowed on the plane.
Pets allowed include:

Service animals
If you are traveling with an approved service animal, slightly different rules apply.

  • If you are traveling with more than one trained service dog (up to two), fill out a form for each. On the plane, the dog must sit on your lap or in your personal footwell.

  • Remember that Spirit does not consider animals used for emotional support or therapy to be service animals. Emotional support animals are treated as pets when checking in and traveling with Spirit.

Spirit Airlines Pet Rules
Of course, when flying with a pet on Spirit, strict rules and regulations apply to protect you, your pet, and your fellow travelers.
  • You do not need a health certificate for a pet unless you are flying to the US Virgin Islands. However, a rabies vaccination certificate is required for pets traveling to Puerto Rico.
  • A maximum of two pets are allowed per pet carrier, but only one pet carrier per guest.
  • Pets should be able to stand up and turn around in their container.
  • Pets must remain in their carrier during flight.
  • The animal must be at least eight weeks old and completely weaned.
  • The animal must be harmless, odorless and docile and does not require special attention during flight. In addition, the animal must be healthy, calm and not in physical difficulties. If your pet causes a disturbance prior to exiting the aircraft gate, you and your pet will be removed from the flight.
  • Pets are not allowed in the first row or at emergency exits.
  • The combined weight of the pet and its carrier must be 40 pounds or less.
  • The dimensions of your pet carrier must not exceed 18 x 14 x 9 inches and the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you.
  • The sides of the pet carrier should be soft but your pet's head should not be outside the carrier.

Spirit Airlines Reservations and Check-In with Pets
