If you're traveling with Air China on an upcoming flight, here's everything you need to know about your baggage allowance and fees. Your allowance may vary depending on the type of ticket and service you fly.
Air China carry-on luggageYour carry-on baggage allowance depends on your class of service. Economy class passengers are allowed to take one piece of hand luggage on board. The weight must not exceed 5 kg and the dimensions must not exceed 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm.
First Class and Business Class passengers can take two pieces of hand luggage on board, each weighing no more than 8 kg. Again, each piece of hand luggage must not exceed the maximum dimensions of 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm.
Any carry-on baggage that cannot be stored in the overhead bins or fit under the seat or any baggage that is overweight or oversized will be checked in the hold. Fees apply.
Air China checked baggage
All Air China fares include free baggage allowance. However, the allowed weight and size of each bag depends on your flight and class of service. Please see below:
On domestic flights:
Economy class passengers can check in 20 kg of luggage. Business class passengers can check 30 kg of luggage and first class passengers can check 40 kg of luggage. Babies have a checked baggage allowance of 10 kg.
Each piece of checked baggage must not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 40 cm.
The checked baggage allowance on international flights varies depending on the route.
To/from America, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and Asia (except Japan) and regional routes to/from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan:
Economy class passengers can check in one piece of check-in baggage weighing no more than 23 kg maximum. First Class and Business Class passengers can check in up to two pieces of check-in baggage, each weighing no more than the maximum of 32 kg.
Items must not exceed 158cm in overall dimensions.
To/from Japan and transit routes to the Americas (including Hawaii) from third countries and Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan via mainland China:
Economy class passengers can check in up to two pieces of check-in baggage, each with a maximum weight of 23 kg. First Class and Business Class passengers can check in up to two pieces of check-in baggage, each weighing no more than the maximum of 32 kg. Passengers with babies can bring an additional piece of 23 kg.
Items must not exceed 158cm in overall dimensions.
If your baggage exceeds the permitted weight or size restrictions, Air China will apply excess baggage fees. On domestic routes, you will be charged for each kg that exceeds the permitted limit. The fare is 1.5% of the published one-way economy adult fare for the route you are traveling. On international routes, you will be charged for additional bags that exceed Air China's baggage allowance, for a bag that is too heavy, or for a bag that is too large.
Air China Checked Baggage and Excess Baggage Fees
If your luggage exceeds the weight or size restrictions, Air China will charge you excess baggage fees.
On national routes you will be charged per kilogram. The fare is 1.5% of the published one-way economy adult fare for the route you are traveling.
On international routes, you will be charged for additional bags that exceed Air China's baggage allowance, for a bag that is too heavy, or for a bag that is too large. Rates depend on the route traveled.
For example, on a flight between Canada and the Americas and the Caribbean (excluding the US and Canada), Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Southwest Pacific:
An additional piece of luggage would cost 1400 RMB or 220 USD.
An additional second piece of luggage would cost 2000 RMB or 310 USD.
An additional third piece of luggage would cost 3000 RMB or 460 USD.
A bag that is too heavy or too big would cost 980 RMB or 150 USD.
On routes operating on a weight-based system, the free baggage allowance for babies is 10 kg, and the dimensions of each piece of baggage do not exceed 100 x 60 x 40 cm. On routes with a piece system, the free baggage allowance for babies is a maximum of 1 piece. 23 kg, with dimensions not exceeding 115 cm in total. You can also check in a bassinet or stroller for free.
Air China carry-on luggage and musical instruments
If your musical instrument falls within the carry-on baggage allowance, you can take it on board as a single piece of carry-on baggage. If your instrument exceeds these dimensions, you can purchase a baggage seat ticket for your instrument, which is the same price as a passenger ticket.
