Chandigarh, June 19, 2024: Northern  India has been experiencing high power demand conditions due to a scorching heatwave, and the highest ever peak demand of 89.62 GW in the Northern Region was successfully met on 18 June 2024, as per Northern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (NRLDC).

Over the last one month, the northern region has been witnessing a record demand due to the prevailing heat conditions. In Punjab it met maximum demand of the season of 15930 MW, Delhi also met maximum demand of season at 8667 MW.

The maximum demand of the day in other states was   Rajasthan 17689 MW, Haryana  13373 MW, and UP 28752 MW.

It may be mentioned that the multiple tripping occurred  after power demand in the northern region peaked at an unprecedented 89.41 GW on Monday , due to tripping of bipoles of Kurukshetra –Champa 800 KV HVDC line  which was carrying 4500 MW from western region to the northern region.

To meet the maximum demand of the states, NRLDC is importing 25  to 30  % of power requirements from neighboring  regions. All the power utilities have been advised to maintain a state of high alert and minimise forced outage of equipment.

Hydro power plants have been advised to run maximum load during peak evening hours instead of day time. All generating companies  have been advised to keep their plants in healthy condition to ensure full capacity availability for optimal operation of various generation sources.
