Hi Folks,

Episode 6 of Season 7 of the SF Math Teachers Circle takes place on
Saturday, 4 May 2024
at Proof School, 973 Mission St.,
from 10:30AM--1PM.

To celebrate Star Wars (you all know the reference), we will look at some hard-core mathematics with an elegant flavor. Our facilitator will be Shamil Asgarli (Santa Clara University).

Counting trees: 1, 1, 3, 16, 125, 1296, 16807, 262144, ..
We will explore mathematical objects called trees. The goal will be to count all possible ways to draw a (labeled) tree with n vertices. Arthur Cayley first examined this question about 135 years ago. We will derive Cayley's elegant formula, and along the way, we will also learn about Prüfer codes, which provide us with an elegant way to encode each labelled tree with a unique sequence of integers!

We will provide coffee, tea, pastries, and lunch.

Proof School is located on Mission Street between 5th and 6th.  There's cheap metered street parking across the street (only good for 2 hours, though; tied to your license plate) and more expensive parking at the Fifth and Mission garage at...guess!  And BART and buses are nearby.

All teachers at all levels are welcome.  Please share this invitation with others.  Our events are free (including lunch).

Please RSVP with this form by Wednesday 1 May 2024.

We hope to see you soon!
