Hi Folks,
Alon Amit got sick and was unable to present on Dec 13. I was the substitute and was grateful that the attendees were not too disappointed. Alon was to present at our next session on Jan 24, but it turns out that Proof School's old location (973 Mission) is completely cleared of furniture and projectors, etc, so is not a comfortable place to meet. Proof School has moved to a very nice new location (221 Main), but there are still final detail renovations being done on Saturdays, so it is too noisy to meet on Saturday. Hence
we are moving by one day:
Episode 3 of Season 9 of the SF Math Teachers Circle takes place on
Sunday, 25 Jan 2026
at the New Location of Proof School, 221 Main St.,
from 10:30AM--1PM.
We bring back the popular mathematician and expert expositor and math "influencer" (over 100K followers on Quora) Alon Amit, who will reprise a session that he did five years ago. Alon was unsure if he should repeat a topic, but I said, "How many times have you seen Casablanca?"
Functions, graphs and iterations
We are so used to thinking about functions as their usual Cartesian graphs that we sometimes forget the two concepts are separate. We will review a different way to think about and visualize functions, one which is particularly suitable for functional iteration. This will let us take a peek into the rich world of dynamics of polynomials and rational functions, including the incredible theorem of Sharkovskii.
We will provide coffee, tea, pastries, and lunch.
Proof School is located on Main Street between Howard and Folsom. I do not know what the best parking options are but Rincon Center is nearby. It is a short walk from the Ferry Building and Embarcadero BART. The new location is very nice!
All teachers at all levels are welcome. Please share this invitation with others. Our events are free (including lunch).
Please RSVP with this form by Wednesday 21 Jan 2026 (so that we can plan our lunch order). Please RSVP even if you replied to the previous invite (for 1/24). We hope to see you soon!
And mark your calendars for our upcoming sessions (all on Saturdays 1030-1 at Proof School):
Mar 14 (Paul Dancstep)
Apr 11 (Linda Green)
