Hello Olivia,
This is Suet Yi Goh, one of the EP for the NET PROJECT under AIESEC UIBE. I hope you remember me and all is well for you.
I would like to inform you that I will be ending my internship in a week (July 16th), and regretfully, I would have to say that AIESEC UIBE did not perform up to expectations. This email is to express my disappointment towards the way your local chapter had handled the whole internship issue.
I would like to stress that, AIESEC BFSU were the ones who had helped me out, especially Rita, who is now in Turkey. She found me my host family and the two NGOS what I have been working with. I would give full credit to AIESEC BFSU for helping me out when I am not affiliated with them at all.
Basically, I had no interaction, activities or whatsoever with any members of AIESEC UIBE. It was only when my buddy and Alex(VP OGX) picked me up from the airport and that was it. I would also add that, Chris the project manager and Emily, basically had no idea what was going on. Everyone seemed confused and blur most of the time.I also presumed that there was a lack of communication from the team that were handling the whole NET project because different individuals kept asking me for information and had no idea at all who was actually doing what! I doubt that anyone even knows which NGO I am posted with up till now! Also, there was a change of leadership in the project but us trainees were not formally informed. The way Chris handled made me felt like the message he was sending was "I am an alumni now and byebye". Well, literally, it felt like that.
Your team members have mentioned that things would get better, but well, nothing really happened. How could that be the case? Up till now, there has not been a reception for the trainees that came in under AIESEC UIBE. No formal events or any official introduction period hosted by AIESEC UIBE.
I am aware that towards late June/early July, UIBE are having their finals. However, as a local chapter, you guys are expected to balance that properly and not just abandon your trainees. I am certain that all local chapters in all universities go through that. It is a matter of organization, discipline and coordination and it should not be used as an excuse over and over again to explain a lack of commitment from your team. A Beijing Trainee Group link via gmail does not replace physical interaction. Maybe it would for the newer trainees, but I seriously do not see myself benefiting from it.
My experience here in Beijing has been delightful and enjoyable, but I do not credit that to AIESEC UIBE at all. The people I met and hung out with are my own local Beijing friends from my own university, friends and family of my host sister, other non AIESEC interns working at the same NGO as me, and my colleagues from the work place. AIESEC UIBE interaction is zero. The people who have enhanced and made my trip here enjoyable are non AIESEC affiliated individuals. The only other time I met up with other AIESECERS from my project are through our own arrangements and also because one of them is Malaysian (I am Malaysian). Beijing is indeed a wonderful city and I enjoyed exploring it, but on my own and in a very non AIESEC-ly way.
Basically, I have given up waiting for any AIESEC UIBE activity to happen as I am leaving already. However, I hope that this email serves as a reminder that AIESEC UIBE has lots to do to make it up to your other trainees who are still going to be here.
Sincerely,
Suet Yi Goh
