Subject: [IMP] ET Trainee Feedbacks 2nd Round of Collection
Dear LCs,
I have pasted and attached the 2nd round ET trainee feedbacks collection. This time you will find feedbacks from 21 trainees of DUT, GDUFS, HUST, SYSU, SZU, UIBE, UNNC, XJTU, XMU and ZJU.Although it is almost the end for most summer realizations, few LCs still have complete contact information of their trainees, and to my disappointment, many LCs have only very few contacts. Our MC CEED Tavi have been working very hard to survey the trainees but it has been very difficult because support from LCs was not insufficient. Now she turns to trainees for help instead as they have more information. She was frustrated by the fact the she knows our trainees a lot better than us.The parts in green are good feedbacks while the ones in yellow are negative. We will continue to collect more feedbacks from the trainees and keep you updated.Dear Tavi,
Again thank you very much for your efforts to control and improve our exchange quality. You contribution is highly appreciated.Best,TigerDUT: Dalian Aston Future English School - Caterina
Caterina was picked up at the airport and met them one on the street for a little chat but hasn't heard from the LC really since then. The school instead has helped her settle in, got her the mobile phone and inernet, etc. Says Aston Future School and its staff are really "amazing." Gives them a grade 5. As for AIESEC - says experience of AIESEC is just a database where she found this job and one nice girl picking her up at the airport. Gives the LC a Grade 2: they have been helpful and always replied to her emails and questions, but no initiative from them, no real reception, no tour around the city like they had promised her. Says would love to write about her time at the school but can't commit - is very busy.
GDUFS, ShenYe futian Kindergarten - Ashwin
Very good feedback for GDUFS. Ashwin says reception was "excellent", was picked up at the airport, even though the airport is far away and his flight was late by 2+ hours, making it past 11pm, and LC members had their final exams. Was given a booklet with everyone's phone numbers in it + important information and schedule for the next two days. Was taken to breakfast next day, got phone, metro car, etc, then a big reception dinner, and a social afterwards. LC members extremely easy to get in touch with; sees them almost every day, plus often goes out with them on weekends. When he had a serious problem - lost his debit card and had no money - the LC lent him money. They also helped to make his work schedule more concrete. Also - LC responded very quickly when he first applied for the TN, match took fewer than 2 days. Would love to write something for us and give photos, but he cannot promise anything as is very busy. One comment: "I'd say that things are so great here that I find myself saying "Life is beautiful!" on a weekly basis." Gives Grade 5: "this experience has breathed new life into me!".
HUST, New Oriental School of Wuhan - Jessica
Jessica had a really good time in Wuhan and enjoyed meeting people, but she is very disappointed concerning LC HUST. She was met at the airport by someone who had nothing to do with AIESEC and so couldn't answer any questions. Problems with New Oriental School: the TN description/what HUST told her was very different to New Oriental School's practice. She was told trainees had weekends off and could pick their own classes and go travelling a lot, but this was not the case at all. Jessica believes HUST are "very out of touch" with New Oriental School - they need to "re-evaluate their relationship with them", communicate better with them (and with trainees) and sort out the discrepancies. As far as socials are concerned, HUST had two social events during her entire stay and only began to plan trips when many trainees were already finished. Jessica says she really enjoyed her time in Wuhan but "unfortunately none of that was really AIESEC's doing". Rates Wuhan experience a 4, but HUST only gets a 1. Says she could write for us but hints it wouldn't be a good thing for AIESEC.
HUST, New Oriental School of Wuhan - Diane
Diane says her experience was "okay", that she's "heard other people had worse." Doesn't have any problems now but hints she has in the past. Grades 3.5 but will not write a recommendation for us.
HUST, New Oriental School of Wuhan - Stephen
Stephen says he had a good reception, LC warned him re expectations before he came, so even though he says he "had a bit of a wait", it was still good. Says that contact with HUST is "decent". Hasn't met a lot of people from HUST, but the few that he did meet were really helpful and invited him to some events. Says has had "an amazing experience", grade 5, "a blast!". Will write and help out, is keeping a blog already. schang20.blog.com
HUST, New Oriental School of Wuhan - Zack
Zack says HUST have been helpful when possible, notes it was their exam period when he arrived, so understands things were difficult. They picked him up at airport, took him to hotel, also to the school and helped him get a phone. Some social events too, believes that he can contact them if he needs to. Has no major issues - but some miscommunication between trainees and the New Oriental School. He says that the issue has been resolved for him, but he knows other trainees have had problems and been disappointed. Grades experience 3.5, says will write if he has time, also be willing to talk more over the phone.
SYSU,GUANGZHOU ECHOM SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY CO.,LTD - Heidi
Heidi has not yet met her LC Buddy, who was apparently doing military training, though this has been over for more than a week. Says "not a good reception", was only phoned a week after she arrived. Had to take the initiative herself to organize meet-ups with other AIESECers. Says there have been accommodation problems, but not too serious: one month without air conditioning, and frequent water stops, which are inconvenient but not too bad. Says real problem is work. She came here as an MT, promised that she would be given actual work, with only a little bit of teaching English to the employees. However, she has done nothing but teach English, so it is just an ET. Also company treats her like a soldier - she had to do military training and stuff. Has also been forbidden from trying to speak Chinese in the office, even though the main reason she came here was to improve her Chinese. Gives overall Grade 2. Says would write, but that we probably don't want her testimony, as it would be very negative.
SZU, Discover China-DiySmart™ Education Consulting Co. Ltd. - Shaon
Shaon says the LC was "good": was picked up, given dinners, taken to the park. One problem - they did insist Shaon attended an LC meeting that was mostly conducted in Chinese and the AIESEC stuff was too specialized to be understood anyway. Lasted a day and was a waste. But did appreciate the LC's efforts to create social events whilst they had exams. Overall Grade 5 for the experience: "It was a truly unique, life-impacting experience". Work was excellent, colleagues very welcome and friendly, helped with any problems. "These AIESEC internships I have found are far more than employment opportunities; they are "life" opportunities, affording students a chance to experience a different life for a period of time. " Has had "incredible experiences, met some really interesting people."
UIBE, Discover China--World international English school - Alexandre
Alexandre was picked up by UIBE, helped to get a Chinese cell phone, notes it is easy to get in contact with them. But also says UIBE has been more "reactive rather than proactive" - no events planned until Alexandre sent in an evaluation survey. Has had problems with the TN, which hasn't kept to the terms of the TN form. Lots of negotiating to be given an allowance - was meant to have a salary, but TN said they couldn't provide one as Alexandre came on an L visa (as recommended by UIBE). Gives grade 3 out of 5 due to having to negotiate for things that should have been there already. Also problems with organization - not told important information about classes. Alexandre believes that the TN wants to make a profit from its interns by "preying on their innocence or ignorance"; thinks the TN deliberately tries to withhold money promised from the interns and expects to get away with it, because the trainees have only just arrived and don't know how things work. Also believes the TN gives far too much work which firstly breaks the terms of the TN form and secondly is disproportionate to the compensation they get. Alexandre has complained to UIBE but has got the impression they cannot help.
UNNC Hi’ way Foreign Language Training School - Ibrahim
says the LC has been very good. They picked him up from the airport, even though it meant a 3 hour car trip for them. Sorted out accommodation, helped him find his way around the area. Doesn't expect them to be around all the time, as he knows they are on holiday. Has a trainee buddy nearby, has been very helpful, sometimes go out together. Has met some other AIESEC members and trainees, has been able to connect to a lot of people. "All these things have really made living in China a wonderful experience." Hasn't had any problems. Gives Grade 5, and will write if he has time.
XMU, Discover China - King's International English Xiamen Center - Brian
Brian is back in the US already. Says LC were "very helpful", didn't experience any problems with work or accommodation, etc, gives overall Grade 4.
XJTU, Xi'an New Oriental School - Shirley
Shirley was picked up, taken to dormitory, but didn't have much contact with AIESEC, none really for the 1st week, found it hard to settle in. New Oriental only paying about half of what they promised, and won't negotiate. Hard to get hot water as well. Also curfew - New Oriental lock the doors, have to be back for 10pm. LC hasn't been able to anything - understands they were busy with their exams. Met up with them briefly after exams, but then most of the LC went home. Knows this is the first time for AIESEC with the New Oriental in Xi'an, but it's still far too disorganized, schedules are needed, and better communication. Says it's hard to communicate to AIESEC. Still gives experience overall a 4, as she's managed to adapt.
XJTU, Xi'an New Oriental School - Cadie
Cadie says reception was good, LC met her at the airport, has seen a member of the LC almost every day. But New Oriental is "crap, horrible", hours bad, salary problem - was promised around $440 dollars a month, not getting that. Worked for two weeks straight with no day off, and after 3 weeks has only had 1 day off. Says New Oriental are "too powerful and are taking advantage" of the trainees. Gives the TN Grade 0! LC and AIESEC gets Grade 5 - has had a good time despite New Oriental being so bad. Note: apparently two different camps/categories at this New Oriental: one half of the trainees have fewer hours but are locked in, the other half are at a hotel but get no breaks.
XJTU, Xi'an New Oriental School - Patricia
Patricia - was picked up from city centre, told to take a train, as no one could meet her at the airport. Had a bit of a problem with the dorms but moved. No problem with the LC: "brilliant, helpful." But New Oriental have been bad: contract/TN form haven't been stuck to. Issues over wage, and the hours in the contract, can't get days off. Has only had one day off in the entire time she has been there and did overtime to get that the day before. LC is in constant renegotiation with New Oriental School, but nothing happens. Gives LC a 5 grading, but New Oriental School gets a 1.
XJTU, Xi'an New Oriental School - Jacqueline
For Jacqueline, the beginning was "really harsh". The TN form promised many things that didn't happen. The difference between reality and promises very shocking, living conditions were "pretty bad", bathroom bad, beds were ridiculous, bugs everywhere running water gone sometimes, food bad, no washing machine, shower, had 4 to a room when it was promised only 2. Also very disorganized - didn't start work until 16 days after was meant to. TN also asked if they could come earlier and promised accommodation but then didn't provide it. Jacqueline luckily had relatives to stay with, but others had to get a hotel. Also problem with the salary - was told 450$ monthly, but getting only 3000RMB, and issues about food being paid for or not. New oriental School also lock the door at around 22:30; one time Jacqueline and others had to stay out until 6 am, as they wouldn't open up. Teaching schedules also bad, sometimes only given minutes before. Re local AIESEC - Jacqueline thinks they have genuinely tried to help but haven't succeeded. Thinks the communication between New Oriental School and the LC isn’t very much. Had a welcome party from the LC but 3 weeks after she'd arrived. No one was able to come see her before the 1st. Has also had a dinner with them. Gives overall experience a 3, as things really could still be improved. The beginning gets a grade 2.5
XJTU, Xi'an New Oriental School - Wojciech
Wojciech has found the TN to be really bad - accommodation is bad, he has fallen ill for the 3rd time, and the others have been sick often too. Says construction is going on there, dust everywhere. Has found it very hard, was "a shock". also doesn't think much of the LC's "excuse" that this is the first time the Xi'an project is being run. Things should have been better - TN form should have been accurate and shown the truth about New Oriental. The salary was wrong, and working on Saturdays was unclear: they work every Saturday, contrary to the TN form, and even Sundays too. Also didn't have a place to stay until the 1st of July. There was talk of homestay, but they had to get a hotel. They also had to pay for their own shower at first and now use a bowl to shower with. Says the LC person "who set this up and put us in this [terrible] place" made a mistake. As well as the lies about salary, etc, New oriental also treats them like the children - puts them under curfew, etc. Says a few from the LC stood out, but overall rates them as "rubbish". Has enjoyed experiencing China (Grade 5 for that), but the LC and New Oriental get only 2.5
ZJU, Discover China-Hangzhou New Oriental - David
David says his experience has been fine, was picked up at the airport by LC, they helped him get a mobile, settle in, were "pretty good." Not really many socials, but he hasn't had much time. There is an LC member working at the TN: Crystal. David says there has been a problem about the money - were promised more than they're actually getting. It doesn't bother him, but he knows other people are really upset about it. Also TN wasn't clear about the hours they would be working - varies considerably without much warning. Gives overall Grade 4, will write.
ZJU, Discover China-Hangzhou New Oriental - Jack
Jack says it's been overall good, although it was "chaos to start with, many problems." There were 12 teachers from Washington who weren't AIESECers already there, confusion about what he and the AIESEC trainees were meant to be doing. Were moved to another camp. Problem about the salary - are not paid what they ought to be getting for 2 months work, but he doesn't really mind - didn't come for the money. Has travelled, but on his own/with the other trainees. Says camp is really good, Crystal from LC very helpful. Grade 4, will write if has time.
ZJU, Discover China-Hangzhou New Oriental - Thomas
Thomas has found his experience "pretty good", but at the beginning, "there was chaos." The camp had over-hired, there were many other non-AIESEC teachers there. Was moved to another camp that had hired no one. New camp is "absolutely great", worked out very well, even though it was nothing like they all expected. Says were not paid as much as promised, but that it doesn't bother him too much - didn't come for the money. Says Crystal from LC was very helpful, gives LC a grade of 3. Overall experience 5*+. Will write if have time.
ZJU, Discover China-Hangzhou New Oriental - Anthony
Anthony says reception from LC was "fantastic", was taken to accommodation straight away, says there has always been an AIESEC member around. Have also been taken on trips into the city, on days out, meals, helped with getting train tickets. But problem: "serious lack of communication" between the LC and New Oriental School. School didn't even seem to be expecting Anthony and already had another set of non-AIESEC teachers there. Had nothing to do for the first five days. New Oriental also did not keep to the contract/TN form - was meant to receive $580 per month but is only getting that for the entire duration of the trip. Also the camp is finishing a week earlier, and the trainees are expected to fund their last week in China by themselves, as they cannot change their flights. Anthony has still had a good time in China, rates experience at 3, despite the problems.
ZJU, Discover China-Hangzhou New Oriental - Daniel
Daniel was picked up at the train station, says LC was "pretty nice", helped him get a mobile, get to the school, had a reception party, and took trainees around the city for a day, gave them meals, are there to answer questions. But New Oriental have been bad. Has had to leave the job early because New Oriental have not followed the contracts. The salary was bad, and the problem couldn't be fixed. Found it awful that another group of non-AIESEC teachers are there getting paid double than the AIESEC trainees for the same work. The non AIESEC teachers aren't qualified professionally in a way that would justify the pay difference. New Oriental also wanted him to stay the next 2.5 weeks working for nothing. He refused, saying that was too much after being "screwed over for the first half." Describes New Oriental as having "bullied" him and the other trainees. Is now travelling China until his flight back. Two others, Emily and Maya, changed their flights and left China early.
Daniel says LC were very nice, but he wondered why they couldn't get the deal that the non AIESEC agency workers got. Had a great time in the classroom with the students and his colleagues, but New Oriental "could have been run better if a 16 year old were in charge." On top of the bullying, they were very disorganized about the teaching - didn't know what classes they would have, how many students, what level they were at, etc. Gives overall grade 3. Didn't want to give the LC a low grade because they were "very nice", especially Crystal, who was great and tried to help them, but can't give them a higher grade because ultimately the LC couldn't do anything to change New Oriental's behaviour.
