Dear all AIESECers,
I hope this email finds you all well. I am writing you all this email to clarify some things regarding the current situation in Egypt and answer some of your concerns.
Current Situation in a nutshell:
For the past days Egypt has witnessed demonstrations in several areas around the country, marking one year of the Egyptian President holding office where the people want to voice discontent with the with the way that the president and government are leading the country.
Egypt went through a rough week. Starting a couple of days before the 30th of June. A day planned to hold a massive protest across Egypt in a stand against an unjust regime of the Muslim brotherhood. But it wasn't long before a change of wind flew in leaving Egypt with demand met to a full extent, arrested leaders for corruption and military forces in all areas in major cities ensuring protection and peaceful protests. Protests marches and squares became full of Celebration rather than protest.
What should I be concerned about?
Despite the peaceful intents of the protests and celebrations, there are still many incidents of violence that occur between opposite parties at the demonstrations area as might happen at any area with such huge gatherings of millions of people. However, given the size of Cairo, Areas with demonstration are the only places where these incidents occur, and life is actually going on normally and peacefully in the rest of the city.
So if a person stays away from demonstrations, they wouldn't feel anything and would continue with their lives normally.
What about the Interns in the Country?
We have already sent updates to the network and to all the interns about the measures taken to ensure their safety.
However despite that, some interns still pursue their sense of adventure and curiosity and decide to go to some of the demonstration places. And this is what I would like to request your help with, to stress to the interns on the fact that they should follow the advice we give them for their own safety.
What if I still have any concerns or questions?
Please feel free to contact me or any people in AIESEC Egypt any clarification, help or documents needed that might make things easier for you.
Please help spread the right image to your networks.
Warmest regards from Egypt :)
