A PLATFORM FOR MUSIC THAT TAKES A STAND (Stephan Said a.k.a Stephan Smith)
Internships: Beginning May 2010, both short (3 months) and long-term internships (6-12 months) [open deadline]
Description: difrent: is the bandstand for global equality, environmental sustainability, and an end to war: podcasts and broadcasts of rare performances with today’s established and upcoming musicians and young activists who are taking a stand with their generation worldwide to make history. A new model for music activism, revenues from download sales, text message donations, royalties, and advertising will support difrent’s work, and fund initiatives of participating organizations around the world on a constant basis, using songs to connect a mass, global audience demanding peace, economic equality, and a healthy environment.
Every society in human history has dreamt of a more equal world: one where we lived at peace with each other and our planet. We can be the first ones to achieve it. We have the tools to go beyond another one-off music campaign for charity or aid, and do something no generation’s ever done before. We can lift our voices together, creating the art and culture of a new world order. All we have to do is get organized and be difrent.
difrent: is a sustainable, for-profit business that funds its non-profit foundation to support initiatives worldwide. It includes a virtual radio station and broadcast (radio, tv, podcast), website, and record label, with international distribution, working alongside a team of professionals working in social development.
difrent: Grammy Award winning Producer Hal Willner (Tom Waits, Bono, Saturday Night Live) has already produced the launch single “Take A Stand,” by Stephan Said, the Iraqi-American organizer/artist who has been called “the clearest voice of the protest movement rising out Seattle” and compared to a Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon for the global generation in the NY Times, BBC, RFI, CBC, etc. Award winning film producer and biographer Martin Torgoff is completing the promotional video starring folk/civil rights legend Pete Seeger, music legend Danny Goldberg, Hal Willner, Stephan Said, and others. Upon the release of the single and video in Sept. 2010, Stephan and band will do an international tour to universities in collaboration with several organizations to connect and raise the voices of youth standing up for an end to war, equality, and a sustainable environment. The tour and release will create the base audience and social network to then distribute music, video and other content on an ongoing basis.
