The United States Meets Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders (USAME)

USAME is an active network of individuals interested in strengthening and supporting transatlantic relations. The next USAME Weeklong Seminar will take place in Washington, D.C., & New York City from 18th - 24th April 2010. In addition to looking in greater detail at the history and development of cultural diplomacy, the next USAME Weeklong Seminar will look at how the priorities of U.S. foreign policy have changed since the end of the Cold War and are continuing to evolve. This will provide a framework for discussions on contemporary transatlantic relations, and for comparing and contrasting foreign policy priorities in the U.S. and Europe.

The Forum is aimed at young professionals and students, economists, diplomatic and political representatives, and civil society practitioners. The weeklong seminar will consist of lectures, seminars, workshops and panel discussions by leading figures from the fields of politics, diplomacy, civil society, academia, and the private sector, which will offer a range of perspectives on the issues at stake, the challenges ahead, and the new strategies and approaches being taken to address these challenges.

The program will be complemented by cultural and social activities that will provide an opportunity to experience the diversity of the respective cultures and provide networking opportunities between the participants themselves, as well as between the participants and speakers.

In particular, the seminar will focus on the following issues:

·         The history and development of transatlantic relations since 1945, focusing in particular on the Marshall Plan, the city of Berlin, and the changing nature of relations since 1989

·         The use of cultural diplomacy and soft power by the U.S. during the Cold War, and the importance this played in determining its outcome

·         The similarities and differences between the foreign policy drivers and strategies in the U.S. and Europe, looking in particular at the application of cultural diplomacy.

·         The development of U.S. foreign policy priorities over the past two decades, with a particular focus on the objectives of the new U.S. administration and the strategies employed to pursue these objectives
