Subject: Bill S-10 Update: Liberals announce opposition
To: Caleb Chepesiuk <ca...@cssdp.org>

The Liberal party recently announced they would now oppose Bill S-10 because the "bill disproportionately targets youth and would cause an explosion of costs to build new mega-prisons".  But just to be sure, we asked Liberal justice critic Marlene Jennings.  CLICK HERE to watch the video of our talk.

CSSDP congratulates the Liberal party for joining the NDP and Bloc Québécois parties in acknowledging the negative and harmful impacts this proposed legislation would have on young people and all Canadian communities.  The Liberal party supported both previous incarnations of the bill (Bill C-26 and Bill C-15) in the House of Commons and now they have a chance to redeem themselves.  The NDP and Bloc Québécois have opposed this legislation from the beginning.  Now with the additional Liberal votes, the legislation that would impose mandatory minimum sentences for a myriad of drug crimes and the rescheduling of several substances into a higher punishment category, can be defeated once and for all. Finally!

YOUR ACTION IS STILL NEEDED!  Write your MP and let them know you support their decision to vote against Bill S-10, and that you will be watching to make sure they do. Thank them for their opposition, and remind them why you oppose Bill S-10. It is vital that all Liberal, NDP, and Bloc MPs be present and vote against Bill S-10 next time it comes up in the House.  (Click here to find your MP by postal code)

Stopping Bill S-10 will prevent Canadian policy from moving backwards; it is up to us to push sensible policy forward.  CSSDP will continue to work with the friends and allies we have gained through this long campaign in our mission to end the prohibition of drugs, and the criminalization of people through drug laws.

CSSDP needs your support in our mission.  Your contribution can go a long way in helping the youth and student drug policy reform movement expand.  Your support helps CSSDP chapters get our message out to communities across the country, and at all levels of government.  Through making a one-time donation or becoming a monthly supporter, you can help CSSDP push the government to not just echo our slogans on the impact of the drug war, but to take real action.  Please visit www.cssdp.org/donate to donate today.

Stay sensible,
