Today's News
1) International Health Forum
Greetings from the People's Health Movement Secretariat(Global) at CHC
Bangalore!
This is to inform you that an International Health Forum (IHF) for the
defense of People's Health is being organized by People's Health Movement
International on 14th and 15th of January 2004 in Mumbai preceding the
World Social Forum which is going to be held from 16th to 21st in
Mumbai.
We hope some of you are planning to attend the World Social Forum. If you
are planning to attend the World Social forum then you could plan to
attend this as well. The program is still evolving and would be subjected
to some amount of changes. To get to know more details and updates about the
program visit www.phmovement.org.
You could also extend this invitation to your other network
members/associates/NGO's whom you work with /support etc. This would be
a great opportunity to meet/network with the various national/international
resource people involved in health and allied developmental fields.
We hope you people would participate in the event actively and contribute
to the event in more ways than one (volunteering, taking minutes etc.).
Hope to see some of you in Mumbai.

2) Appeal from Kashipur campaigners
Dear all,
Below is a request from Amit Mookerjee, a volunteer from Asha Seattle who
has been involved in the Kashipur campaign for the last couple of years.
Being a tribal displacement issue, it is similar in spirit to the Narmada
struggle. Please contact Amit at am...@cs.stanford.edu AND Sunil at
lax...@u.washington.edu if you have any questions or want to volunteer
some time for the campaign. The most important need is for volunteers to
make calls on Dec 16th to the corporation Alcan, as described below.

Mokshay
Appeal from Amit

Dear Friends,
You may know of an indigenous people's movement against a proposed
bauxite mining project in the Kashipur area of Orissa.A few of us in the
US have been supporting the Kashipur movement for the last couple of
years. Please refer to www.saanet.org/kashipur for an overview of the
proposed project and the movement.

On Dec 16,2000 the conflict between the police and the adivasis
culminated into a firing that left 3 adivasis dead and several injured.
Following this incident all construction and survey related work was
stalled. However,a recent judicial enquiry has absolved the mining
consortium UAIL and the government of any wrongdoing in the event. This
in effect paves the way for the construction to start again. The local
people are determined to fight the project till the end. On our side we
have been exploring ways of putting pressure on the Canada based
Alcan-one of the members of the UAIL consortium. Recently we were
contacted by a Montreal based group (where Alcan is headquartered)
expressing interest in doing a public campaign against Alcan to divest
from the project. To build up this campaign we decided to start with a
phone call-in campaign on Dec 16,2003 -the anniversary of the killings.
This campaign involves individuals calling Alcan headquarters at a
particular time on Dec 16,2003 with a message that they should divest
from the project. The Montreal based group is also arranging a small
protest at the Alcan headquarters on the same day.

At this moment we are looking for volunteers for this event. We have
been trying to do outreach within the Indian community groups within
North America and get them interested in the event. If you are
interested in participating please send an email to me
<am...@cs.stanford.edu> AND Sunil <lax...@u.washington.edu> . I would
also request you to forward this message to your friends and
acquaintances who maybe interested.
Best Wishes
Amit

3) New Year Cards by Kids
Hi Friends,
The kids in Jagriti Bal Vikas Samiti's school in Kanpur make greeting
cards. Jagriti is a group based in kanpur which works in education. AID
has been supporting Jagriti projects since 1996.
If anyone would like to order the greeting cards... please let me know or
write to Mr Mahendra Dwivedi <mk...@yahoo.com>. We can figure out a way
to get them to the US when volunteers return from India (a lot of us
would be returning January).
You can look at these cards by clicking on Kid's Forum on the website
http://home.iitk.ac.in/~mkv/jagriti/
Thanks
