Fwd: [AID-CVC] AID Petition campaign - We The People _ Chapter Actions

Hello friends,

Association for India’s Development (AID) has long participated in the Bhopal gas disaster survivors’ struggle for justice. Our Jeevan Saathi Rachna Dhingra has been providing us leadership and direction on this front. The gas leak from the Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) fertilizer plant took place on 3rd December 1984, instantly killing thousands and continues to impact the health of many more. The effects of the disaster are ongoing while the corporations involved (Dow Chemical took over UCC in 2001) have evaded liability and enjoyed profits from their business operations everywhere.

On 15th May our partners International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal - North America (ICJBNA) along with Bhopal Medical Appeal and other organizations launched a “We The People” White House Petition (https://wh.gov/isOdv), asking the US Department of Justice to make Dow appear in the Bhopal courts for trial.

We need to obtain 100,000 signatures by June 13th for this to happen. The next Bhopal hearing is on 13th July 2016 (attached court notice) and we hope to bring Dow to court.

AID is a co-sponsor of the petition and we need participation from all volunteers and their networks to make this campaign successful. Please see the following action items:

1. Sign the petition if you already haven’t at https://wh.gov/isOdv and email the petition link to your chapter contacts for support. Sample text attached

2. On Facebook accounts of AID chapters: Please post/share petition updates and posts from AID’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/AIDindia/ and International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal (ICJJB’s) page https://www.facebook.com/InternationalCampaignforJusticeinBhopal/ from your AID chapter and individual FB acccounts

3. Post/share tweets from @ICJBhopal and @AIDINDIA on the issue

4. Share memes, graphics, art, videos at chapter and individual capacities - Please contact me for samples.

5. Events - documentary screenings or petition sign-in events (Bhopali / ESPN60: Bhopal’s Children - contact santos...@gmail.com for details)

6. Community Outreach - Reach out to local donors and environmental, social justice groups urging them to sign
