Hi
We all have been using Windows since childhood and the biggest problem that we face is CRASH! And along with that we loose most of our data. This is specially troublesome when we are working on some assignment or report and just before the time of submission everything is lost along with the effort that you put in. The standard reply of a professor to this event is "Why dint you keep a backup?"

To avoid such a situation one could essentially use the CSC server and use WinSCP to copy your important stuff in your home folder (yes you have a home folder on CSC /tmp and /var/preserve etc are not the only folders!). But this being a tedious job most of us do not do this and everything works fine till the day of the CRASH!

Recently there was a mail on IITD Webmail from Prof Subhashish Banerjee related to Home Spaces through CIFS share (http://www.cc.iitd.ac.in/CSC/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=95&Itemid=121). Using this facility you can map your Home folder on CSC servers just as a normal drive in your computer and work on that. Keeping your data safe from crashes. CSC also keeps snapshots of the data of two previous midnights and two previous sundays. Right now the limit is 500MB which could increased in the near future.

For creating Network Drive on Windows you essentially have to do the following:
  1. Go to https://www.cc.iitd.ernet.in/usermanage/index.html and change your proxy password.
  2. In expolrer (My Computer) choose Tools->Map Network Drive (In Windows 7 this is also available as a shortcut on the top)
  3. Choose a drive letter for your new drive
  4. Students in these departments cas, cbme, ces, chemistry, civil, cse, hss, ird, library, physics, polymers, temp, textile, visitor choose \\filer01.iitd.ernet.in\homes\yourdc\your-category\yourid  as your folder, where yourdc is your department code and your-category is btech dual etc. and yourid is your proxy username
  5. Rest of the department students choose \\filer02.iitd.ernet.in\homes\yourdc\your-category\yourid  as your folder.
  6. Check both Reconnect on logon and Connect using different_credentials
  7. Enter your proxy password.
  8. In case of any problems or detailed screenshots you can mail to sys...@cc.iitd.ernet.in or you can feel free to contact me (cs50...@cse.iitd.ernet.in)
Now every time you start your computer and you are connected to IIT D lan you would be able to access these files on the Drive that you have mapped as given above.

For Linux
ssh1.iitd.ernet.in or ssh2.iitd.ernet.in can be used by going to nautilus->Connect To Server and choosing ssh as the option. In linux CIFS shares can also me mounted by using the instructions on http://www.cc.iitd.ac.in/CSC/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=95&Itemid=121

You can share this on your google grps if you find it worth sharing.
