The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco earned LEED
Platinum certification by realizing Renzo Piano’s vision of “lifting
up a piece of the park and putting a building under it” – in other
words, a living roof. Both the desired form, emulating San Francisco’s
seven hills, and the distinct weather in Golden Gate Park presented a
multitude of challenges to the Design and Construction Teams. The
Library of Congress Packard Campus in Culpeper, VA turned an outmoded
Federal Bank facility into the world’s largest audio visual archive –
complete with a five acre living roof which includes both intensive
and extensive installations. The 400,000sf project uses green roofs to
integrate the large facility into the surrounding landscape and to
insulate and protect the collection. This presentation will offer a
look at these two projects by the people who helped realize them.
Come and be part of an engaging event on living roofs being organized
by AIASF COTE (Committee on the Environment). The event will start
with a reception (with snacks and wine) followed by the presentations
and a Q+A session.
