The AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit (ASM) is leaving Reno.
It will be moving to Orlando in 2009.

To my knowledge, ASM is the largest of any AIAA meeting. Doing some
sleuthing on Google, it has apparantly met every January in Reno since
the 21st ASM in 1983. Prior to that, it met in Orlando (1982), St.
Louis (1981), Pasadena (1980), New Orleans (1979), Huntsville (1978),
Los Angeles (1977), Washington (1976), etc.

What brought on the move to Orlando? A couple of years ago, AIAA
learned that the Reno Hilton was due to be demolished. There really is
no other available facility in Reno that combines ample meeting rooms
and exhibit space for the meeting. (There is the Reno-Sparks
Convention Center, but ASM timing typically conflicts with the Reno
Auto Show.)

What is to become of the hotel? One story was that the recreational
facility on one end or the other of the property was going to be
extended. At this time, the hotel has changed ownership; it is now
known as the Grand Sierra Resort Hotel.

If you are retired or student member on a budget, and really want to
see what this meeting is like, then the 2007 and 2008 meetings are your
last opportunities for a long time. Undergrad members get in for free;
gradstudent members (including PhD students) and retired members pay
$40.

Have a Reno ASM story that you want to share? This is a good place to
post it.

Here are some more specifics regarding the move.

The AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting will meet at the Orlando World
Center Marriott, in Orlando, Florida, for at least three years (2009 to
2011).

If you are interested in the future of the property, check the page at
http://www.condohotelcenter.com/condo-hotels/featured-properties/grand-sierra.htm
and there is even a Wikipedia page on Grand Sierra Resort Hotel.

But January just won't be the same without the Reno meeting!
