Historic buildings contribute immensely to the fabric of our cities. Some recent earthquakes have once again exposed the vulnerability of historic buildings in seismic zones. One notable example is Christchurch, New Zealand — where in 2011 most historic (or “heritage”) buildings suffered irreparable damage or collapse despite implemented seismic retrofits and a building code similar to that used in the United States. Allen Nudel and Russell Berkowitz of Forell Elsesser Engineers will present their documentation of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and discuss a variety of approaches to seismic upgrades geared toward existing buildings.
