Please Join the AIASF Historic Resources Committee for an exciting tour of the recently rehabilitated Bayview Opera House

Constructed in 1888 and designed by Henry Geilfuss, the South San Francisco Opera House and its lodge building stood as the first community center of its kind in an outlying area of the city. It continues to provide community arts programs and hosts performances through its tenant organization, the Bayview Opera House. For its unique architecture and place in the community, it was designated a city landmark in 1968 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. The recent accessibility upgrade project of the building and site was a result of a 10-year effort by the San Francisco Arts Commission.

The tour will be led by Ruchira Nageswaran of Knapp Architects, together with Arfaraz Khambatta from the Mayor’s Office on Disability, and Rommel Taylor of DPW Building Design and Construction. We will discuss the workings of a public project involving both DPW and SFMTA, walk the exterior accessible elevated walkways and paths through a revitalized landscape, and view interior architectural and structural upgrades to this Victorian building, all of which provide an integrated way of meeting the needs of all who use this vital community center. For more Bayview history and culture, attendees are invited to join us after the tour at the historic Sam Jordan’s Bar, 4004 3rd Street.
