On behalf of the C2PA for G+LAM Community of Practice, we are pleased to announce the release of Content Authenticity and Provenance in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: A Call-to-Action for the LAMs Community. You can download the report here: https://tinyurl.com/bdej7rd9.

This white paper is intended for preservation administrators and practitioners across the LAMs sector who, in one way or another, find themselves addressing the impact AI technologies are having on the content integrity of their collections. AI, especially generative AI, challenges long-held principles of content authenticity and provenance (CAP), while introducing new risks to institutional capacity, raising privacy and ethics concerns, and compressing windows to assess development and adoption opportunities. Central to this call-to-action is the conviction that the solution should not come from a single standard, institution, tool, or industry leader. Rather, it will require the collective effort of the community to conduct fundamental research and development, forge public and private sector collaborations, share results as widely as possible, and remain an active participant in the shaping of AI technologies driven primarily by industry interests.

The report was co-authored by Kate Murray, Digital Projects Coordinator at the Library of Congress, and Joshua Sternfeld, historian and heritage strategist specializing in responsible AI. Additional contributors included David Cirella, Head of Digital Preservation at Yale University; Ann Hanlon, Head of Digital Collections & Initiatives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries; Nick Krabbenhoeft, Assistant Director of Digital Preservation at the New York Public Library; and Eric Lopatin, Product Manager for Digital Preservation at the California Digital Library.

The C2PA for G+LAM Community of Practice is a Library of Congress-led initiative working with preservation practitioners across the U.S. Although the group’s name highlights C2PA, its expanded scope now encompasses CAP efforts beyond C2PA.

In the spirit of this report, we invite community feedback: c2...@loc.gov
