Dear AI4LAM community,

Most images that depict AI suck. Visual clichés of glowing brains and anthropomorphised robots do not accurately represent AI research and the topics that many of us are invested in - the manifold impacts of AI systems on everyday lives, the hidden processes and human labour behind AI development, the material aspects of hardware powering AI systems. We need alternative visual narratives that would allow us to communicate about AI in more meaningful ways.

The Archival Images of AI team, supported by EuropeanaTech, invites you to join an interactive online session on 10 July at 15:00-16:00 CEST to explore how we can reuse archival collections to create new images that depict AI. During the session, we will discuss and test different approaches for creating imagery based on archival collections. We will reflect both on the narratives we wish to construct about AI and those embedded in archival collections that can lend us a critical lens on AI development.

Register to join the session using THIS LINK.

We look forward to engaging with cultural and creative practitioners who are knowledgeable in both AI and creative reuse topics (e.g. how to reuse collections with care, what biases should be recognised, etc.).

Insights from the webinar will directly inform the next phase of research – designing, testing, and publishing practical toolkits and guidelines for those interested in making ‘better’ images of AI using digital heritage collections.
