Two open PhD positions on AI for robot navigation and perception at the University of Freiburg, Germany
The Robot Learning Lab (https://rl.cs.uni-freiburg.de) at the University of Freiburg and ELLIS Unit Freiburg, Germany, headed by Prof. Abhinav Valada currently has two open full-time PhD positions (E13 100%). International candidates are encouraged to apply, knowledge of the German language is not required. The candidate should have:
+ Master degree in computer science, robotics, machine learning, computer vision, or a related field
+ Strong passion for robotics, perception, mathematics, programming and abstract thinking
+ Programming skills including in deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch (programming experience in C++ would be a plus)
+ Excellent written and communication skills in English
For the PhD position in AI for Perception and SLAM:
+ Prior research experience in one or more of the following areas:
* Scene graphs
* SLAM
* Foundation models
* Continual and online learning
* Visual localization and odometry estimation
For the PhD position in AI for Robot Navigation:
+ Prior research experience in one or more of the following areas:
* Planning and reasoning
* Reinforcement learning and imitation learning
* Foundation models
We furthermore expect outstanding qualifications, the motivation to obtain a doctoral degree, and the interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment. The candidates are expected to conduct independent research and contribute to ongoing projects.
About the Lab and Freiburg:
The Robot Learning Lab is part of the ELLIS Unit Freiburg, the Department of Computer Science, and the BrainLinks-BrainTools Center. The lab is equipped with several robots ranging from a self-driving car, mobile service robots, a quadruped, UAVs, and mobile manipulators. The lab has state of the art computing resources in the form of multiple GPU clusters.
