Hello All,

We have a open postdoc position at Mila. Please share to those that may be interested.

The Robotics and Embodied AI Lab (REAL) at Mila has open positions for postdocs in robotics and machine learning. The Robotics and Embodied AI Lab (REAL) is in the Département d’Informatique et de Recherche Opérationnelle (DIRO) at the Université de Montréal. REAL is directed by Canada CIFAR AI chair holders and professors Liam Paull and Glen Berseth and has four research assistants, over 20 students and is affiliated with four professors around Montreal. The research in the lab uses machine learning methods to enable robots to complete complex real-world tasks, such as cleaning, navigation, cooking, and manufacturing, among others. Research in this area has reached a level of maturity that requires diverse and complex environments for proper and rigorous evaluation and the main direction of the lab is to create generalist robot systems that can be used to complete a diversity of tasks across robots.

The lab is looking for more postdocs to add to the lab's strength. We invite all candidates with experience in the following to apply.
  • Sequential decision making and reinforcement learning: multi-agent RL, generalization in RL, hierarchical RL, sample efficient RL, RL for discovery, language-based RL agents, goal-conditioned RL, offline RL, etc.
  • Unsupervised Learning: unsupervised RL, intrinsic rewards, representation learning for deepRL, safe RL.
  • Robotics: Legged robotics, planning from vision, autonomous learning, large models for robotics, control theory, Sim2Real.
  • Computer Vision: Vision models for robotics, vision-language models, invariant representations.
We generally expect successful post-doc applicants to have an established publication record in machine learning, robotics, or computer vision and have obtained or be in the process of obtaining a P.h.D. in computer science or engineering. A strong background in deep learning, reinforcement learning, or robotic learning is strongly preferred.

Job Description & Opportunities:

The successful applicant will carry out research on Machine learning and robotics research and related topics. The postdoc will be expected to guide and shape new research in these areas and to interface with industrial collaborators and sponsors. As a REAL postdoc, you will help to push the state of the art in the field, using cutting-edge hardware (Franka arms, UR5 arms, Clearpath mobile robots, mobile manipulation platforms, quadrupeds, humanoids, and Mila's dedicated compute cluster, etc.). There are also many connected robotics research projects in scientific discovery (self-driving labs for material design, energy optimization, drug discovery, etc) related to the Institute Courtios.

This position is designed to provide the postdoctoral researcher with training in all key areas relevant to an academic and industry career: research, managing large projects, leading-edge software tools, grant-writing, and student supervision and mentoring. Depending on the qualifications and interests of the successful applicant, there may be an opportunity to teach or co-teach at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Required skills:
  • A Ph.D. in a robotics or ML-related field with a strong math background (math and physics applicants welcome).
  • A track record of publishing at top international venues (e.g., ICRL, ICML, NeurIPS, JMLR, IJRR, T-RO, RSS, CoRL, CVPR, ICRA, etc.).
  • A demonstrated ability to initiate new research projects and a desire to lead a research team.
  • Excellent spoken and written English language skills (essential).
  • Programming expertise with C++, Python, Docker, Compute Servers.
We are looking forward to hearing from you. Submit your applications here.
