Hi all,
We’re recruiting a fully funded PhD student to work on generative foundation models for ICU event data in the ERC Starting Grant project GPT-MEDIC at the Medical University of Innsbruck.
Topic
ICU data are irregular, continuous, and shaped by clinical decision-making—making cross-hospital generalisation hard. This PhD will develop generative pre-training methods for clinical event streams with the goal of enabling models that transfer across settings and support many downstream prediction tasks.
Data & collaboration
You’ll have access to a large multicentre ICU resource (~1M patients, ~33B clinical events; ~half available from day one) and collaborate closely with clinical/data experts at Amsterdam UMC, UCL, and University of Cambridge.
Requirements
MSc in CS/stats/related quantitative field
Strong Python; experience with PyTorch / TensorFlow / JAX
Evidence of completing technical work (thesis/publication/GitHub)
Clinical data experience helpful but not required
Practicalities
Start: as soon as possible (flexible)
Duration: 3–4 years
Location: Innsbruck, Austria (English working language; German not required; relocation expected)
What’s offered
Fully funded position
Salary: €39k gross/year (30h/week; per university agreement)
