Lulea
Reference number 3443-2024
Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 2 billion per year. We currently have 1,500 employees and 17,900 students.
In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.
The Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is offering scholarships for two Postdoctoral Fellows to carry out research with the Machine learning group in the area of Sustainable Machine Learning. We are looking for you who are ambitious and creative, who have a Ph.D. thesis and strong academic publications, and who want to contribute to cutting-edge research in this area. The research is in connection with a larger umbrella of research projects (e.g., connected with the Kempe-WASP project) with the target of organizing a competence center on Machine Learning and AI for Sustainability at LTU. As part of our dynamic research group, you will spearhead innovative initiatives at the forefront of sustainability and artificial intelligence, driving forward groundbreaking advancements with real-world significance. You will report to the Head of the Machine Learning group, Professor Dr. Marcus Liwicki.
Subject description
Machine learning focuses on computational methods by which computer systems uses data to improve their own performance, understanding, and to make accurate predictions and has a close connection to applications.
Project description
The postdoctoral researchers will collaborate with the Senior Lecturer, Dr. Hui Han, and her research team in sustainable machine learning projects. The research projects in sustainable machine learning are focused on developing Edge AI solutions that harmonize environmental responsibility with technological progress. Central to these initiatives is the transformative potential of Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) (https://youtu.be/MgqcLCqqjuQ), which allows AI deployment on resource-constrained devices such as microcontrollers, enabling energy-efficient systems across the cloud-to-edge continuum. By leveraging heterogeneous hardware and enhancing software engineering processes and interoperability, these projects aim to create AI systems that are robust, explainable, and widely accessible. Additionally, they prioritize social and environmental responsibility, ensuring that sustainable AI development not only advances technological capabilities but also aligns with long-term societal and environmental welfare. As this scholarship is funded by a foundation grant instead of a research contract, there is considerable flexibility that can be discussed during the initiation phase.
Qualifications
In order to be eligible for this postdoctoral scholarship, you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, embedded systems, mathematics, robotics, or a closely related field. A doctoral degree awarded no more than five years before the application deadline provides a useful qualification.
For this scholarship, a Ph.D. with experience in the above-mentioned areas is expected. Demonstrated background in machine learning, Internet of Things, embedded machine learning, Edge AI, or Tiny Machine Learning, and statistics are desired qualifications. We are looking for you who are capable of conducting state-of-the-art research as demonstrated through a record of peer reviewed publications. You will ideally also have some experience in international research project collaboration. We expect you to have a good knowledge of English both in speech and writing and have the capacity to work independently as well as in teams. As Luleå University of Technology is very strong in application-oriented research, industrial experience is very welcome. The Machine Learning group is very diverse (gender-balanced and having 20 nationalities) and welcomes diverse applicants.
Information
The Postdoc scholarship is for two years with placement in Luleå, starting in December 2024 or up to negotiation.
