hi everyone,
i am the same rajalakshmy who was in 201 with my sister usha
accompanying me. my official name is rajalaskhmy. i prefer to be
called asha. i was in avs from 18.12.2011 to 7.1.2012 for rhuematoid
arthritis treatment. i have been having this for the last 15 years. i
was on homeo mediiation till oct 2009, when it started not
responding.after that took some steroids and was managing for another
year. again my condition became worse and had to go on steroids again.
then thought i will try ayurvdea. started having kashayams since
october 2011 in chennai itself. found good relief and on the
suugestion of my dr at avs chennai had come for massage .

post my treatment at avs, i thought i was fully charged, joined duty
from 9.1.12(i work in a bank) and after three days i was down with low
bp & fatigue and just couldn't get up from bed. after rest of 2 days i
was alright. i think the drs should insiit on rest afte the treatment.
now also, if i strain my pain is more, otherwise i am just able to
manage. my right knee stiffness/swelling has reduced 20% , but yet to
find any relief in my left ankle pain. with both legs getting
effected, i find it quite diifficult to walk, especially in the
mornings.

since i started the new medication they had prescribed after the
treatment "punarnavadi kwatham "tablets, i just couldnt seep in the
night because of breathlessness due to severe acicdity. for the last 2
days i have stopped them and i am able to sleepwell. i am yet to
report it to the doctor.

i was little disappointed that i didn't get even 50% relief
immdeiately.but am very hopeful that my condition will become better
with time. But finding it very difficult to answer relative/friends
question on the effect of the treatment, when they ask" after the
treatment, why r u still walking the same?"

Just spoke to another patient who took treatment at bangalore six years ago for chronic back ache.

she was stressing on the need to rest for 90 days after the treatment, complete rest - no lifting of anything etc absolute rest. - or else pain will become worse itseems.

For me complete rest is not possible - I have a 3 year old son to take care of and absolute rest is almost impossible -

Now I am worried whether this will affect my recovery. Will try talking to one of the duty doctors there.

Restwise how are you guys doing ? Are you in complete / partial rest - how many hours of travel, normal household chores - grocery shopping, driving, cooking etc you do -

Please let me know

thanks
revathi

Hey Asha: Guess you require the stipulated rest period that the doctor had proposed! I know it is difficult but if you can manage that somehow, please do.

Hi Revathi: Well, as far as I understand complete rest takes care of the remaining and most crucial 50% of your entire treatment. Please try your best at it.

Taking complete rest for 90 days is impossible. If you can afford that, you may not even go for this treatment. I think relaxation and not getting very tired is important, for how long, i don't know.
I am back to my normal schedule, get up at 5:30 am, do some stretching, go to the gym for an hour 3 to 4 days a week, go to work, i  work mostly from a desk in front of the computer, reach home around 6:30/7 pm. I don't have much house keeping to do, no kids at home. But weekends, I do run lots errands. I am not feeling any additional benefit from the treatment either..
here is an article I found, may be helpful for some of you:

i talked to the doctor over phone and got some alternate
medicines(arishtam) which suited me. iIt is impossible to take
complete rest.for my rhuematic condition going to work is a must. then
only all my joins will move.and whatever discomfort i have i forget.
since it is desk job i dont end up straining too much.but i do avoid
going out, even for vegetables.i do apply oil daily in the morning as
prescribed, but hardly do my evening application twice or thrice in a
week.
sruti, when r u leaving?

Dear Srinivasu,

I have been suffering this for over 20 years now. Although I haven't been cured completely, the pain is definitely under control. I had a very good relief after the first treatment in 2011 but the two subsequent treatments in 2012 and 2013 were not as effective.

I suggest that you check with the doctors and do a follow up treatment .

All the best

Regards,
Asha Narayanan.

Hi, thank you for your suggestion. I wanted to know if you are currently taking any painkillers or allopathic medicine. How do you feel now ? And what ayurvedic medicines are you taking if any and how do you manage to go to work? Your response would be really helpful. Regards

Asha ji, also please let me know which panchkarma treatment you underwent i.e. Virechan, vaman or basti or all of them. Or was it different in all 3 years when you went for treatment.

Saurabh,

RA is an autoimmune disease. Unless you understand the underlying pathology to take corrective steps you will not be able to get any relief. You have to do a few changes in food: STOP eating modern wheat and all modern vegetable/soy/corn etc oils. Learn more about food on my blog about Health and Nutrition at https://yrusick.wordpress.com/ and go to http://chriskresser.com/adrenal-fatigue-glutathione-status-and-rheumatoid-arthritis/ as a starting point to learn more about foods and supplements that will help you with RA. Curcumin-95 is one of those foods.

But please first and foremost STOP EATING WHEAT and ALL VEGETABLE OILS. Watch some videos listed on my blog under Educational Videos on these topics.

Thanks for the useful info. Read your other posts and blog. Quite informative. One of our friends was recommending going to Rishikesh. Which place did your wife go to in Rishikesh? Also I have learnt that most autoimmune diseases are psychosomatic so would really want to go someone in Rishikesh. Also wanted to know if your wife got treated at Avs Delhi or not? How was her experience at Rishikesh? Good or bad but please let me know the place.

Saurabh,

The way you described your condition it is a PHYSICAL condition although it may be a result of autoimmune disorder. My wife went to AVS Delhi for the initial consultation. The doctor there was very terse and did not do any specific clinical exam or history taking. He just recommended in-house 15 days program costing about Rs 55,000 to 85,000 (depending on accomodation). Declined any one off test treatment. Overall did not inspire confidence.

She went to Rishikesh twice for 10 days each program in an Ashram costing Rs 18,000 each time. The treatment was in one word BRUTAL. The place came highly recommended and so she went twice although after 1st time her condition had become very aggravated. Second time she could not even complete the 10 days and the treating practitioner, Swami Aprokshanand, conceded that she was becoming worse. We have no doubt about his sincerity and knowledge. Just that it didn't work for us. She is suffering from FIBROMYALGIA and Chronic Pain flowing from our car accident over 8 years back. It is 4 months since her return and has not recovered from that setback.

Someone who recommended that place had also gone there during this period for the second time and was happy with the outcome although everyone agrees the treatment is BRUTAL. It is like 3rd degree torture. He had problem with Disc Herniation in L5S1. Another lady in my wife's batch came on wheelchair and went back walking on her feet. So there are apparently good outcomes at that place. Personally, we are very skeptical of recommending that place to anyone based on our outcome. You may do your own due diligence.

The name of the place is International Spiritual Health Academy (ISHA) 365 Chandreshwar Nagar, Rishikesh-249 201 Tel: +91 (135) 243-8558

Keep me informed about your experience in this place, if you go, or any other that you may try. I think Jindal in Banglore (where Arvind Kejriwal went) could be explore too.

Hi Shailendra, the phone number that you've mentioned seems to be incorrect. I tried calling the no. but the ivr said,'you have dialled a wrong no.' Can you please check again if the no. is correct? Also if you can share what was the 'BRUTAL' treatment in brief coz that's really scary. Would really appreciate that. Thanks. Even I was thinking of going to Jindal but most of relatives either recommended going to Rishikesh or AVS. I will be posting here my experience with one of the institutes be it Jindal or Rishikesh.

Hello Saurabh,

You may try speaking to the Ashram Manager, Singhal, at 94-111-10552. Feel free to give my reference.

As for treatment being BRUTAL, the physical modalities of pressing pressure points all over the body with a pointed electric device, pulling and stretching various joints with force, running heavy electric vibrator on your back, neck and head are few of the things that I recall my wife telling me. Then, as part of detox program, a very hot paste (many times hotter than Wasabi, if you know that) is injected in both the nostrils through a syringe. It hits the head hard as well as goes into your stomach. This is absolute TORTURE.

But as I said before, the family which recommended me here in Toronto has gone through it many times and are all praise for this treatment including the son who has Slip Disc issues. My wife has not benefited at all. Rather suffered enormous aggravation. I believe anyone signing up for this program should be aware of these issues. Unfortunately, neither the family here, nor the Swami (whom my wife met at Delhi before joining) gave any idea of what was actually involved. All said and done, my wife still has faith in this treatment based on outcome of others that I mentioned before. So who knows. All I am trying to do is make you better informed so that you are not caught unawares by the sheer force of it.

Grapevine has it that Swami Aprokshanand is a former teacher and/or mentor of Ramdev although no direct claim was made by Swami himself. He is in his 70s and could very well be. And one thing particular in praise of Swami Aprokshanand. He is very dedicated and works tirelessly during those 10 days of program treating all the participants from early morning till late evening. He is definitely not in it for himself. This is not an expensive high profile place like Jindal.

Hope it helps. Which city you are in BTW?

Hi Shailendra,

Thanks for your message. The nostril treatment as you explained is very scary and definitely would think twice before going. Would you suggest AVS? It's all really confusing, even within AVS branches there are a lot different opinions. Many opinions are confusing me on what to choose and whether the one selected would really prove beneficial or not. I am in Pune.

I would not recommend going too far from where you live. Most of these treatments are available in major urban centres. My wife is getting now Korean treatment from some traditional practitioners in Toronto. Nothing has worked so far and nothing is working even now. At least, we are not spending time and money traveling too far. As for the nostril treatment at Rishikesh, I don't think it is scary to the extent of dangerous. My wife and her sister got it and I don't think it has had any lasting adverse effect. Surely, the second time she was declined that treatment by the Swami fearing that she may go in shock with rest of her pains aggravated too much. Her abdomen pain is much more of a problem which happened with the Swamy pressing it too hard. So caution is certainly advised but remember their are many success stories too. There is no real substitute to trying different things. So do what you can.

Coming back to again Arthrities being an autoimmune disorder, the answer may lie more in nutrition and supplements than physical modalities. Avoiding toxins like GMOs and chemical/pesticide exposure (including in cosmetics) may do the best for you.
