Subject: Global Intern Programme relaunch!

Description automatically generatedAs the leader in global public health issues, WHO is committed to building a diverse pool of future leaders in public health.

The Internship Programme offers a wide range of opportunities for students and recent graduates to gain insight into our technical and administrative programmes and enrich their knowledge and experience, and thus contribute to the advancement of public health.

4 key changes to the reformed programme:

  1. The creation of an application process that allows candidates to review individual internship vacancies on the website and apply directly to each separate vacancy; offline applications are not accepted.
  2. The creation of a process to increase accountability of technical units to recruit interns in line with the principles of gender balance and geographical diversity;
  3. The provision of in-kind assistance to all recruited interns in the form of medical/accident insurance, and daily meal vouchers; and
  4. The provision of financial assistance for all interns in need (defined as any intern without receipt of formal financial support, such as a grant or scholarship, that is explicitly provided to support the undertaking of an internship).

We aim for a target of at least 50% of accepted interns on the programme from least developed countries and middle-income countries in all WHO offices to achieve balanced participation among WHO regions and gender equity.

To ensure the well-being of interns, as well as their ability to properly contribute to their teams’ objectives, we recommend that interns are assigned office space close to their teams, and that they be present in the office a minimum of three days p/w. Managers and team members are encouraged to be present at the same time.

If your department would like to recruit an intern, consult the eManual and the Internship Programme intranet page for detailed information on the programme and guidance on the revised global process, including a comprehensive document with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
