Welcoming City Ordinance
What is it? It’s a city-level Sanctuary City type of ordinance, makes sure that Chicago Police demand immigration status information from people, or detain people based on immigration status and turn them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
What’s the deal now? The Mayor wants carve-outs in the ordinance, which means certain people wouldn’t be protected under this, like folks with criminal records.
What can I do? Call your alderman and ask them to call the Mayor and ask them to pass the ordinance WITHOUT the carve-outs!
[Look up your alderman!]
[SCRIPT: Dear Alderman__________, Hi, my name is _________ and I am calling to ask you to support the Welcoming City Ordinance WITHOUT carve-outs. I believe that in order to be a real Sanctuary City, Chicago cannot exclude people from protection. We’re asking you to call the Mayor’s office and express how urgent it is that the City pass the amendments to the Welcoming City Ordinance as proposed by community members. Thank you for your time.]
