Anyone have the link for video streaming from Maker Build sites? I seem to remember Roxanne providing the AHA stream but darned if I saved the link which simultaneously showed all the sites. Aaargh!

it could be found on http://www.ustream.tv/channel/aha-hackerspace but
everyone kinda stopped making sure it was up and running... I tried,
but people kept closing the broadcast window, which made you go
through some back-ass-wards loop of officially turning off the stream,
and then going back to it and turning it on, and eventually I just
decided I hated ustream, but that's just me.

as far as other maker streams, no idea...

Are you sure someone keeps closing the window? I thought the browser just kept crashing.

no, there's another window that opens, and that's the one that you
push "start broadcast" on. there was a couple of times I would start
it, leave the window up, come back 20 minutes later, and it would be
closed.

Should we start a Clue game? I say it was Colonel Mustard. That guy is a meanie.

Can't VLC act as a video server? if so you could even manage the
streaming via SSH, no physical presence necessary.

Yes, but we would need all manner of access to a machine inside Digital Ops's network from the outside world. That might not be a problem, but is a potential security concern we could do without.

We can open up a port or two if need be, but we don't have much
bandwidth to work with.
- An ideal solution would involve pushing the stream to an external
server with more bandwidth.

A temporary analog solution: Put a note card up on Roxanne with simple
instructions to
1) Login to http://www.ustream.com (save username/password to save a step)
2) Click "Broadcast Now"
3) Click "Start Broadcast"

It's about that simple. I'll do it in the next few days if no one
beats me to it : )

Thanks for the info on Roxanne. But wasn't there a channel showing a grid of about a dozen different maker spaces. Of which one was Roxanne. That's what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Hey hey hey,

http://alphaonelabs.com/matrix.php

Though now the site checks every few minutes and only live feeds will
be shown. Where as before it would display a dozen mostly blank video
feeds.

FYI, this is all that I know about http://www.ustream.tv/channel/aha-hackerspace

Once upon a time, long long ago [like 2 months ago? less? who can tell the passage of time in a basement], our ustream was working splendidly and without fail for a maybe 2 weeks.
Then Amanda installed Skype on Roxanne, and the internet as we know it stopped working as expected. The browser kept crashing. Skype kept crashing.
Amanda then uninstalled Skype, hoping everything would be better. But such wasn't the case. Perhaps someone does keep closing it, but I highly suspect that's not it.

Someone savvier than myself [ahem Nima] might be able to solve the problem. I also suspect if we change the OS from Arch to Ubuntu [as people have been wanting to do for some time], a lot of these weird nuisances will not be an issue anymore. I will look into it the next time I'm at AHA.

Hm... seems to be up and running well for the past hour.. perhaps it's ok?

It's also shown live [along with kwartzlab at the moment] in that matrix:

i just saw "webcam" and "grid" and cried a little bit inside. this is one of those things i can never look at.    Ideas are such a cruel mistress.  Even when you think they are, they are never yours

i think i've got 'work harder' down, i just wish somebody could give a workshop on how to 'work smarter'

speaking of me and my problems, my two job leads through friends didn't pan out (crazy physics dylan manna, and a startup that's kinda an offshoot of saagra).  i'm still waiting to hear back about a lead from saagra proper.  but anyway, please keep an ear out for me!  i'm looking for any short term programming gig!  thx all

If you get wheels on a wireless camera to inspect the activity haphazardly at ground level, you can still make it big with this.

Yes yes yes Amanda.

I want to do this, but with a ceiling mounted track-and-pinion system so that it doesn't take up floor space. Let's give Roxanne a neural net!

Hi Mark,

Don't know about the "short-term" part but follow the Tweets of Kim Kachadoorian @JobsinA2 and you should get some programming leads.  She mostly tweets techie positions.  She also writes a blog on the subject with lots of good advice.  http://www.jobsina2.com/  And, she occasionally has a column in AnnArbor.com.  But since she got her latest full-time gig her writings haven't been updated as often as they used to be.

Good luck!
Larry

PS.  If you every invent that "work smarter" stuff...bottle it!

And then send out notice to other Maker spaces and allow remote "movement" control.  And maybe a webcam watching the ceiling webcam movements.  That way we can find out what projects interest others.

btw - Every once in a while I check out the Detroit River Camera to see what's happening.  http://www.detroithistorical.org/webcam/  Used to live near the River and ship traffic (including fog horns) was a regular topic of conversation.

Cheers!
Larry
