Anyone else think maybe we should just forget about having a web presence and instead run a telnet BBS, a usenet site, and a gopher server? Is it just me?

That would be pretty sweet! But probably also exclude a lot of people who didn't grow up in the 80s/90s. :P  Perhaps an HTTP-based emulator (I think there's such a thing?) for these things hosted on our future site?

God dann, sign me up right now. Fuck the web! It has gone too far.

There's definitely an http to gopher gateway: https://gopher.floodgap.com/gopher/ (and SDF has a rather active gopher community)

I just found this for telnet, but haven't tested it yet: http://telnet-online.net/

Not sure about usenet - I'm sure something exists. Maybe part of the fun is setting up the client?

AFAIK Usenet is still around.

It appears as if nowadays you must purchase access.

Setting up a relay for AHA members seems easy, though.

That's definitely an option.

We could also run our own Usenet server, disconnected from the larger network.

Emphatically agreed. Our new website should be a telnet or gopher client that runs in the browser and connects to the BBS and/or gopher server with all our real content. Which itself is just a dump of a git repository full of markdown.

James and I will make the git repository.

Does gopher support images? I forgot.

Somewhat seriously, I've been looking at ways to auto-convert jekyll sites to gopher sites and/or writing a gopher server that understands jekyll sites. We could totally do something like that.

Also here's modern BBS software: http://www.synchro.net/ - but it might be kind of fun to run retro BBS software. I hear someone has an Amiga laying around... :)

If you set up BBS software I will use the fuck out of it.

Upon further inspection, it appears it would make more sense for us to just use one of the boards already set up:

There's even more here: https://www.telnetbbsguide.com/

I think it would be fun to run a node at some point, but just trying out the tech would also be fun - I've had a login on the main synchronet instance on and off for years - mostly to play Legend of the Red Dragon. Anyone remember BBS door games?
