Ummmmm no. That is not how that works. You for one, do not have the authority to decide what property of the space is "up for grabs". Those are valuable materials that can be re-purposed for the space. I am making it very clear right now, that those materials are NOT up for grabs unless it is a decision that is made as a group and not in a vacuum.

Thanks,

I made it pretty clear both verbally and through email that if anyone wants certain parts from the desk they could stake their claim. There is nothing inappropriate about it because that's how we have been operating for a long, long time based on "if it doesn't have a name on it that means it's up for grabs". On both food (unless its to be sold by the space.) Left over/ forgotten projects, and materials (which we have so many of just laying around that we need to free up space all the time to keep the place roomie.)

We should consider a difference between materials that belong to the shop, those that belong to members, and those that are orphaned/given to us.

Thinking about it some more, the desk isn't community material. Its not something that someone left orphaned. It did need to go and now we are left with remains. The question is what to do with them when we have a limited area to store these things.

If the materials will be repurposed for use in the shop in a timely manner, then I think we should keep them for that, otherwise there is no need to keep hold of them.

Well in that case how timely is "timely". It's 8 days shy of being a month since the take down and no one really has said anything at all till just now. Are we gonna wait another?

Timely is however long we decide. I stress "we". The fact is though, out of all of the stuff we could part ways with, those metal pipes and corrugated metal sheets are probably the last thing we would just give away. They have a reasonable intrinsic monetary value and are particularly useful for construction of furniture or other architectural objects. I agree though, we want to make room, so how about we propose going through some of the less valuable and/or useful things that have been stagnating so we can make room for the stuff that is of particular interest. One area we could look into is the acrylic scrap pile. It is probably getting to be that time again where we need to collaborate with Backyard Brains to determine which scraps they want to keep for re-purposing and which ones we can discard. That alone would create a longer term albeit temporary holding area. Also, on and underneath the electronics table (where Waynestock used to reside), there is likely a lot of room that can be gleaned by organizing the wires, sorting the parts and disposing of the waste.

Thanks,

Nick said it best...

"If the materials will be repurposed for use in the shop in a timely manner, then I think we should keep them for that, otherwise there is no need to keep hold of them.".

Holding items for "unidentified" future use results in hoarding.  A long-standing problem the Ops Manager used to address in a semi-organized fashion.  Remember the FREE table?

Here's how that worked.  An announcement of a cleaning day/time (usually a Sunday) would go to the list.  Then members would gather to clean, organize and separate unwanted items into a pile.

When the day was done another announcement was sent to the list, sometimes with a picture showing the pile.  A deadline for claiming anything was included so members could specifically take possession of things at their convenience. After the deadline, what was left was removed permanently.

This allowed everyone to help improve the space as well as give members a chance to claim things they want.

Doing anything together makes for a better community and a more usable space for everyone who plays there.

My 2 cents...miss you folks.

Cheers.
Larry
