We had so much fun at the first one last Fall, we're going to do it again.

This time All Hands Active Makerspace* in Ann Arbor will host and provide a brief tour of their community workspace, followed by thoughtful breakout discussions at Menlo Innovations starting at 9:30am.  The purpose is to share our successes, make visible our needs and build a more networked group of people who thrive for fun and profit in the world of DIY.

Join us for free coffee, doughnuts and lively discussion.  The meeting is Saturday August 8th with Breakout Sessions.  Meeting details including Pre and Post Meeting activities can be found on Eventbrite.

Breakout Topics:
    • Maker Education - What’s working and what’s next.
    • Extraordinary Relationships (within and between people and groups)
    • Creating & Operating a Makerspace
    • Sustaining & Expanding The Area Movement
Feel free to spread the word with other friends, makers, STEM/STEAM educators, or hackers who love the world of technology and wish to share it with the world.

* Please note, AHA is down two flights of stairs in the basement of the historical Michigan Theater Building.  Unfortunately, there are no accommodations for those with physical challenges.  Such is not the case at Menlo Innovations for the meeting and breakout sessions.

Larry,

Scott kindly forwarded me the information about the Wasthenaw-area Makerspace Meetup (WAMM?!).  Unfortunately I'm going to be camping that weekend, and my partner Jon Hardman will be floating down the Flint River that day.  It's been a while (too long, actually), but I had visited AHA in early 2014.  On that visit I met Martin Sager and shared with him my ambition to start a makerspace in Flint.  That Spring the idea was turned into a reality when I launched Flint Steamworks as a program of Red Ink Flint, a Flint-based nonprofit with a focus on youth, arts, entrepreneurship, and community engagement.  I met Jon last summer, and with his help we carved out a relatively small amount of space in the Red Ink building to serve as our mini/prototype makerspace & community workshop.  We also started an afterschool DIY club at a Flint public elementary school.  We've received a couple of grants, and are operating a weekly open workshop.  Both Jon and I have attended the Makerspace Operations Bootcamp that Maker Works began offering last October.  At present we're working hardest on developing/growing our small community of local makers.

I've had opportunities to meet folks from some of the other makerspaces in the state (Maker Works, AHA, Lansing Makers Network, i3, Omnicorp, Mt. Elliott, GR Makers, Kalamazoo Makers Guild), and I feel that we need some sort of framework/mechanism for communication and collaboration beyond when paths cross at the Maker Faires.  I'm glad to see that you're taking on that initiative.

I will try to connect with you after I return from vacation, and see if I can coordinate a trip to Ann Arbor with Jon, Scott and myself.

Regards,
Mike Wright

PS - it's all work in progress, but here's where you can get information about us:
