Just called Pepsi to inquire as to our stationary state of our
ranking... this was killing me :)

They stated that our position does not reflect vote count at all yet
(although she wouldn't divulge if it was based no actual votes when we
were ranked 140). She also said it might be a couple days until they
feel the rankings reflect votes accurately enough to release rankings
reflecting vote count.

So don't be discouraged by our perpetual 140 position!

And remember, if you haven't voted yet:

http://www.refresheverything.com/DNAprogramming/

Idea: Set your email client's signature to something like:

"
 - Look at me!
 - Submit your daily vote for the AHA BioLab Project:
"

If you're using gmail, click the "Settings" link in the top right, scroll down if necessary until you see the "Signature" section, Copy / Paste.

I don't know how many of you noticed... but I saw on the side it says:

Vote from your mobile phone

Text* 105062 to
Pepsi (73774)
*Standard text messaging rates apply.

Being someone who has unlimited texts (Verizon sales girl, you are a sly
devil), I have found an additional way to vote.

That is good. I felt it would at least update once a day or something, but good.

Dug Song put together an Android app the automatically votes once per day for the A2SkatePark via txt msg when installed.  Someone should reach out to him to ask about reusing his code to do the same thing for Hello World

I saw that! I was going to ask about that as well. Should someone
shoot him an email? I'll do it if no one volunteers.

Hi guys,
I'm talking to Mike Huang about this, and he's kindly volunteered to
write such an app as a donation. :-D

Questions:
1. What should the app be called?
2. Any graphics we can provide?
3. Any centralized code repos where this would preferably be maintained?

Thanks for your help everyone!

Well, we do have the git repo/redmine being hosted by Mark. Shall we put it in there?

Just on Android, or on iOS as well?

Writing it now. I should be finished by tonight. I just need a name, an icon (72x72), and perhaps some artwork.

I don't think iOS would be practical since it would need to go through the approval process to get on the app store before anyone could install it.

I'm open to whatever you decide, this was supposed to be the logo, but
due to some confusion about where things were supposed to uploaded it
ended up buried in the application. Not sure if you want to use it,
if so I can resize it for you. Also, if the app is written such that
there's no need to ever go to the sight at all, then changing the tag
line would be possible too, but do what seems right.

I suppose these are ready for testing.

Though I'm pretty sure it won't go crazy (one vote per 25 hours if you check the box, though you can manually send votes anytime by pressing the button), I recommend you have an unlimited texting plan until this is tested by more people.

NIce job! Now you just need to get people to use it. automation++ :-)

We have one 5-minute slot at the next http://a2newtech.org meetup that
I was holding for the Maker Shop guys (Dale Grover and Tom Root's
TechShop competitor), but if you guys are ready to go, let's have you
do it (but I need to know in the next two days). The 1300+ a2newtech
attendees are a good bet for installs - we did see a good bump in
a2skatepark installs from just mentioning it there.

Also, so I'm clear - this is a different project than what Kyle Lawson
and the otyp.es/speakscience.org guys are up to?

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/peyer/hello-world-modern-biotechnology-for-high-schools
http://www.flickr.com/photos/idfarmer/5247538854/in/pool-1416310@N20/

Nima, did you ever meet up with Kyle (who I've been trying to get to
meet you guys at a2newtech or at the ahashop)?

All of you guys need to meet Andrew Raupp at Initiative Science
(http://www.facebook.com/pages/Initiative-Science/) and Keith Bourne
at Arbor Scientific (http://www.arborsci.com/) also. They've both been
by Beer:30 at the Tech Brewery looking for groups like Backyard Brains
(just down the street from AHA), etc. to work with.

Keep hacking!

Wow, sounds like a great opportunity to speak a the meetup on Jan
18th! I'm thinking that would work out great!

I'll watch the thread for resonance with other AHA members and we'll
discuss as it will take a bit of planning, but I'm guessing we'd jump
at the opportunity :)

Thanks!

Dug,

I'm planning to attend the meetup, and if there's a chance to plug our
Pepsi grant that would be great. It's more about getting this idea
out there than wining this particular grant, but no reason to give up
on it entirely just yet either.

Anyway, i'll watch for you at the meetup, and am hoping to meet the
other "Hello World" folks too!

Jared
