FEATURED COLUMN: Low Sugar Treats To Cool Down When Temperatures Rise
Hi R,
When the temperature heats up, chances are, you are craving something cool. Your first instinct may be to indulge in some ice cream. Clearly though, that is not going to be a smart health move. Most frozen novelties as well will only set you up for skyrocketing blood sugar levels and potential weight gain. Likely not what you had in mind.
The good news however is that there are some delicious treats that you can indulge in this summer without feeling the guilt. In fact, some of these treats can deliver downright great nutrition all while keeping your body satisfied.
Curious what they are? Let’s go over some of the top low sugar treats to be consuming this summer to help keep you cool and well nourished.
Frozen Grapes
One of the simplest and tastiest treats you can prepare for yourself on those hot summer days is a Tupperware container full of grapes. Simply wash the grapes and remove the stems and then dry carefully.
From there, place in a Tupperware container and place that into the freezer for a few hours or overnight depending on how hard you want them.
Now, when you want a snack, just reach in and grab. The great thing about this one is that because the frozen fruit takes longer to eat, you’ll typically consume fewer calories than you would if it wasn’t frozen.
Note that you can do this for just about any fruit as well including blueberries, strawberries, or even melons. Just do keep in mind that you want the fruit to have a decent water content for best results. While frozen bananas can work, they aren’t ideal.
Fruit is rich in sugar, but it’s also packed with dietary fiber, so for most people will be an okay choice for their meal plan.
Fruit Smoothie
Next, consider preparing yourself a delicious fruit smoothie. You can easily make this an icy cold treat by adding enough ice to give it that milkshake like consistency. And, if you really want to make it extra creamy, consider adding a little xanthan gum as well.
This will add texture to the smoothie and give it that real milkshake like taste. Another great alternative option to consider is a tablespoon of sugar-free, fat free Jell-O pudding powder. This too will help give the smoothie some extra thickness and help out with the taste.
Try the recipe below for an idea to get started. Just do remember that you can sub in any other fruits as desired.
1 frozen banana 1 cup frozen strawberries 1 scoop vanilla flavored protein powder 1 cup unsweetened almond milk 1 tbsp. sugar-free, fat free vanilla pudding powder 2-3 ice cubes ½ tsp. xanthan gum
Place all ingredients into a blender and then pulse blend until desired consistency is reached.
Serve immediately.
Frozen Fudge
Another great option for a cool treat on a hot summer’s day is frozen fudge. This one is relatively easy to make. Simply mix together two scoops of chocolate protein powder, a half cup of natural peanut butter and two tablespoons of melted coconut oil.
Mix this and then place it in a small Tupperware container (or even spread out on a plate if you want thin fudgy-like brittle.
Now place this in the freezer for about an hour or until set. Serve. You can also add in some peanut pieces or dried unsweetened coconut as well for enhanced taste. Or, if you want some sweetness, a tablespoon or so of dried cranberries can also work very well.
BCAA Pops
Finally, if you are an athlete or fitness enthusiast and happen to have branched chain amino acid powder on hand, BCAA’s are another fantastic option for creating a cool treat when you need it.
For this, you’ll simply want to mix a scoop of BCAA powder with about 8 ounces of water. If you want to make multiple pops, use two or three scoops and double or triple the water content.
Now, pour these into ice cube trays. Place in the freezer and freeze for about two hours. Once frozen, pop out and now you have bite sized popsicles that are nearly calorie free and won’t provide any sugar.
It’s a fantastic way to satisfy your sweet tooth without risking weight gain.
So there you have a few of the top summer treats you can cool down with as the temperature heats up. All of these are very well balanced in nutrition if they have calories or are virtually calorie free. Feel free to eat them at your leisure and do away with the guilt you otherwise would feel.
