Artists: Are you looking to date, but tired of online dating?
The Dating Ring
(New York NY)
Looking for a better way to meet and connect with fellow artists in NYC? Tired of online dating and forced networking that don't result in real connections? Especially in fields such as art, where you're often working independently or with only a few other people [that you would really not want to mix work and pleasure with..], NY can be a difficult place to form new relationships. The Dating Ring gives you an opportunity to meet fellow artists and creatives, for everything from dating to co-working to sharing job opportunities.

What is this? In short, if Grouper and Pandora met on OkCupid and had a super smart baby, it would be The Dating Ring. The network is invite / application only, and composed of attractive, accomplished, 20 and 30-somethings - including a lot of creative professionals in the arts. Everyone meets me, Lauren (a fellow singleton, 'pro' online dater, Brown '11 grad (where I majored in love) and founder of a 4-year-old babysitting company, SmartSitting) in person, and I do the work for you, of setting you up with your next soulmate or cuddle buddy.

The personal touch of matchmaking is then combined with the powers of technology and a super smart matching algorithm in the works, that improves with dating feedback. Aside from meeting everyone in person and screening out the weirdos, the network is a much lower pressure layer on top of 'real' life, meant to connect the dots of living it up in NYC. We live in an amazing city with amazing people and a billion amazing things we could be doing every day - but everyone, and everything, is so disconnected. I match members up on group dates, some 1-on-1 dates, and arrange group outings to arts and culture related events. The network is just a fun way to keep living your normally awesome, amazing life, but with a few more people to do that with. Or it. Or whatever.

You can view current members here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/458120044281868/?fref=ts , my rambly 'blog' here: thedatingring.tumblr.com and my personal Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/laurenikay .
How to join?: Fill out the application / private profile here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1cXYLSNsT5djJNil-zP41PIfcSu6NKQ0ZLto4WeAZPAI/viewform  . If you look like a good fit, I will ask to meet in person over drinks, with a few fellow newbies. We're in a trial run now, so all setups are free.

Does this all sound ridiculous? That's cause it is. So is love. The loneliness of NYC makes me sad and I’m going to be my crazy self and try to fix this problem, yenta style.

Open Call - Color War Summer Group Show Recession Art (Brooklyn NY) Submissions are open for Color War, our summer group exhibition at 47 Bergen Street.
Color War curated by the Recession Art staff, is now open for submissions. To lighten and brighten up the festive season of summer, Recession Art will mount the exhibition Color War, a show to celebrate the joy and possibility of color in art. We’re putting a challenge to artists to show us the most rich, vivid, and vibrant artwork possible. We’ll be looking for works that put the summer sun to shame, bringing the heat into the gallery and forcing us to keep our sunglasses on indoors. This exhibition will be limited to flat work, with a maximum dimension of 24 x 24 inches and preferably smaller. All submitted works must be ready to hang on the wall, with a focus on works on paper, canvas, or wood. All works must be available for sale and be less than $500. Let the battle begin! Color War will be held July 11 – August 9 at the Recession Art gallery (47 Bergen Street in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn). Artists are responsible for delivering their work the week of July 8th and for picking up their work the week of August 12th. Recession Art takes a 50% commission on all art sold at our shows or through our contacts. No single work of art can be priced over $500. Our submission fee is $30. 100% of this income goes toward the space rental for Color War. Website: http://recessionartshows.com/submit

Show in Small Produce Shop

Open Produce is looking for artists to show their work in the shop. Since we are a store, we are seeking work that will contribute to the existing atmosphere of the space without distracting from the food. We are open to work of various themes, styles and moods, from artists of any background.

One or two artists will be featured at a time. Wall-hanging (paintings, prints, photos etc.) and food-safe (ceramic, glass, wood bowls etc.) submissions are welcome. New work will be specially showcased in monthly “art openings,” which Open Produce will advertise and photograph. We are happy to serve as a reference for a competitive, curated art show on your resume!

Artists are asked to price their work, and Open Produce will take just 15% of all sales. Art sales will transact between Open Produce and the buyer, and we will distribute sold work to buyers and return unsold work to the artist at the end of the month-long showing period. Open Produce will provide basic packing material (boxes, newsprint, tape). Artists and buyers will be responsible for all transportation.

Artists are strongly encouraged to come visit the store and note specific spaces available to show work, prior to submitting photos. This way, you will be able to gauge if/which of your work is appropriate to submit. We can discuss display options at that time as well.

Please contact Sean by emailing a...@openproduce.org for more information. We look forward to meeting with you!

RANSOM - Give us your word you want to be in this show! Wayfarers (Brooklyn NY) RANSOM: Give us your word you want to be in this show! Hello Friend! Thanks for your interest in participating in Ransom. Here's the skinny: First, you agree to participate by clicking to the Submission Site (and paying the $10 fee). https://wayfarers.submittable.com/submit After our application deadline (June 10th), we'll write a story that uses the same number of words as the number of committed participants - whether it's 50 or 5000. (You're welcome to represent more than one word, but you'll need to hit the ole' submit button and pay the ole' ten bucks for each word.) Then, each committed participant will be "assigned" one of the words from the just-written story to represent (not to interpret); this show is all about the words themselves! In the fall, Wayfarers will install all the words on the walls of our Brooklyn gallery in the order they appear in the narrative. We'll also host an exhibition opening for the participating artists that will double as a "release party" for the story. Only participants and gallery visitors will be ever be able to read the story in its entirety. (All participants will receive documentation of the show/story.) Our thoughts about your word: A variety of approaches to representing your word are welcome - drawing, painting, printmaking, doodling, photography, relief sculpture, collage, etc, but the final representation you send to Wayfarers must be: A clear and legible representation of the word itself. Easily wall hang-able with push pins, simple brads or tape (Absolutely no shelf-mounted works, no floor-standing pieces, and nothing that requires pedestals or wall anchors.) The Watermill Center Residency Program
Click HERE to download the Fall and Spring residency guidelines as a PDF Click HERE to apply online to The Watermill Center Residency Program for the 2014 Season.  Applications are due June 12, 2013, at 5pm EST.  Click HERE to view a slide show of artists at work during the Fall 2011 / Spring 2012 Residency Season. The Watermill Center Residency Program began in 2006, when the Center officially opened as a year-round facility. Over the course of the program, up to twenty collectives or individual artists take up residence at the Center to create collaborative works that critically investigate, challenge, and extend the existing norms of performance practice. By June of 2013, the Center will have hosted over 100 residency groups. The Residency Program, which runs from January to June and September to December, gives young artists the opportunity to utilize The Watermill Center as a home and a workshop to create and develop their own work. Each residency varies in length according to artists’ and project needs and generally lasts from two to six weeks, when artists have a concentrated period to focus on their work. Residencies are chosen by a distinguished international selection committee composed of artists, academics, and cultural leaders across all disciplines. In addition to creating and developing their work, artists share their creative process at Watermill with the community through open rehearsals, workshops, and artist talks. We believe this is an important growth experience for young artists as they learn to talk about their work, interact with the public, and receive audience feedback as they move forward in the process of creation. The Center supplements these public gatherings with lectures, seminars, screenings, educational partnerships, internships, and other creative engagements throughout the year. Watermill is part of a growing international network of like-minded institutions and offers resident artists the opportunity for personal and artistic development within this network of contacts. For example, residents have gone on to (or will) perform at the New Museum, PS122, Clocktower Gallery, Americas Society, Performa, the Donaufestival near Vienna, Kampnagel in Hamburg, CPR - Center for Performance Research, Baryshnikov Arts Center and other institutions. The Watermill Center Residency Program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Organization Description:
Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.

Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone.

Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row. A critically-acclaimed series of artists installations is free with admission.

Roots: Drawing Connections Through Community

Founded in 1884, the roots of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center run deep. With over 125 years of providing the highest quality cancer treatment, it’s no surprise that the patients, families, doctors, nurses and staff who serve as the foundation of the MSKCC network consider themselves a tightly knit community. Like the roots of a plant that push deeper while also expanding outward to the left and right, the MSKCC community is constantly in growth. The rotating exhibition of artistic commissions at the Brooklyn Infusion Center is just one among many ways in which MSKCC engages the greater community, but it also has a strong parallel in visual representation. Line – whether bold and angular or sinuous and organic – is a fundamental component of artistic expression. The expansion of line in space mirrors the linear growth of underground roots, offering a useful metaphor for the MSKCC community and the way that it links individuals together through a shared history and mission. For its 2013-14 installation season, BIC invites the community of artists here in Brooklyn and the greater New York-area to submit proposals that reflect on the notion of collective, community roots through the use of line.
