Big change - rebranding the project

Hi everybody,

Wanted to announce a big change to LinkRest - rebranding. The new name is "AgREST". It has a nice ring to it and can mean a few different things:

1. Gooseberry in Belarusian [1]
2. "Argentum" aka "silver"
3. or anything else you'd like it to mean. Some ideas: "agriculture", "accessible graphs" ... :)

The mission of the project remains unchanged - to provide an open framework for building REST APIs for dynamic access to graph data. The rising popularity of GraphQL only underscores the right choice we made back in the day (and we are the only RESTful alternative in this space).

The rebranded project will use the same friendly Apache license, and the same team is behind the effort. We just wanted a more recognizable name. "Link" was throwing people off. It was originally a reference to an internal system in the organization where the project got started, and had nothing to do with web hypermedia links.

Anyways, we just took the first step - the project got moved on GitHub to "agrestio/agrest" [2]. Next we'll be changing package and class names and launching a new website (currently being designed). The next release will be 3.0. In addition to the name change it will have the first cut of the integration with the OpenAPI spec (ex. Swagger) and improved docs. And we'll continue building on that going forward.

Очень не хочу показаться негативным, все-таки наверное новое название кто-то обдумывал и посчитал удачным, но, на мой взгляд оно крайне неудачное. Может быть тут дело в том, что мне не знакомо белорусское слово, так что восприятие изначально никак не окрашено (в данном случае у меня нет положительных ассоциаций со словом). В первую очередь на ум пришло слово arrest, потом стал бросаться в глаза корень agres со всеми его производными словами (причем и русскими тоже, т.к. само собой, агрессия - заимствованное слово). Старое название было не ахти, но по крайней мере оно было очень нейтральное и звучало как-то мягче. Еще раз прошу прощения за эту ложку дегтя, но может быть стоит еще подумать..

A quick summary in English of the Andrei's post: "Even though the old name wasn't ideal, the new name is unfortunate. It invokes associations with 'arrest' and 'aggression'".

I haven't thought of those actually. So yeah, to me it was neutral with a few positive pun opportunities (not the least of which is clear association with the REST technology). Can be pronounced as "eye-gee-rest" also. So I guess I am personally invested in it rather deeply and I think we'd still stick with it.

Let me preface this by saying that I’m speaking as an native American English speaker. I find that AgRest sounds like an agricultural product.  In the US Ag as a prefix is used primarily as a short hand for agriculture.  Certain colleges in the US were created as part of a land grant program and these schools in the past referred to as Aggies or Ag-Schools.

I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing but I strongly suspect you’ll find that connection in the minds of many folks in the US.

I guess this may not be a bad connection. The new design that we are working on will have that berry in there. Maybe we can tie the plant to graphs structures too :)
