These mail programs allow for more accurate filtering because they let SpamSieveaccess the entire raw source of each message, including the attachments: AppleMail, Airmail, Entourage, GyazMail, MailMate, Mailsmith, Outlook.

These mail programs let you control SpamSieve through a regular rule, so thatyou can determine how it interacts with your other rules: Apple Mail, Entourage,GyazMail, MailMate, Mailsmith, Outlook 2011, PowerMail.

You can work around the problem by downloading the app in a different way(which avoids the metadata). First, open the Terminal app in the Utilitiesfolder in your Applications folder. Then enter this command (all on lineline) and press Return.

Note: If you get an error saying that the file is locked or you do nothave sufficient privileges, drag the old SpamSieve to the trash andempty it, and then drag the new one into the Applications folder.

Make sure that the application file is not damaged, e.g. byreinstalling a fresh copy. Also, make sure that you are not modifying theapplication package, e.g. editing its Info.plist file to try to hide theDock icon.

This section describes how to set up SpamSieve and Apple Mail using the Mailextension on macOS 12 and later. If you have macOS 11 or earlier or want touse the more customizable Mail plug-in setup, see the Setting Up Apple Mail(Plug-In) section.

The first time you try to train a message, macOS will ask for permissionto control Mail, and you should click OK. When training multiplebatches of messages, you should wait for Mail and SpamSieve to finishprocessing one batch before training the next.

SpamSieve will process new mail automatically and move the spam messages tothe Junk mailbox. In most cases, new messages in the inbox will befiltered immediately. In rare cases, the Check inboxes for new messages notsent to Mail extension feature will filter them after a slight delay. TheFilter spam messages in other mailboxes feature also operates on a slightdelay.

Spam messages caught by SpamSieve will have brown text and a coloredbackground in the message list. You may also see messages with brown texton a white background (when your Mac is in Light Mode). These were likelycaught by a server-side junk filter before they got to your Mac. Thesemessages were not processed by SpamSieve, so they are not mistakes andshould not be trained as spam.

If you ever need to manually ask SpamSieve to sift through a mix of spam andgood messages, select the messages and choose Filter Messages from theSpamSieve menu bar icon or the SpamSieve Dock menu. SpamSieve will move theones that it thinks are spam to the Junk mailbox.

Normally, when you mark a message as junk or not junk in GyazMail, the messagestays in the same mailbox. If you would like spam messages to move to the Spammailbox and good messages to move to the inbox, you can set up two rules likethis:

If desired, you can set up keyboard shortcuts for training. For example, givethe Train as Spam rule a keyboard shortcut of Command-Control-S, change theDescription of the rule to Train as Spam\@^s.

SpamSieve will process new mail automatically. The SpamSieve Score columnshows how spammy SpamSieve thought each message was, on a scale from 0 to 100(with 50 and above meaning spam). (The Spam Score column shows the spamlevel reported by the server junk filter, if any.)

These instructions apply to Microsoft Office 365 (also known as Outlook 2016and Outlook 2019, versions 15.x and 16.x). If you have lots of messages inyour inbox (such that this setup slows down Outlook), you should insteadfollow the Setting Up Outlook (Large Inboxes) instructions. For olderversions of Outlook, please see the Setting Up Outlook 2011 section.

SpamSieve will process new mail automatically every minute. Messages yet to beprocessed will be held in the InboxSpamSieve folders (and should not betouched while there). SpamSieve will then move the good messages to Inboxand the spam messages to the Junk Email folder.

This option is only possible with newer versions of Outlook. Using theGoogle account type enables some Gmail-specific calendar and contactsfeatures in Outlook. However, we generally recommend using an IMAP accountinstead, due to various limitations and bugs with Google accounts in thecurrent version of Outlook.

We recommend using the IMAP setup (above) where possible because, if you havemultiple accounts, Outlook may move Google messages to the Inbox or JunkEmail mailbox of the wrong account.

SpamSieve works with Web mail accounts, provided that they allow access via POP,IMAP, or Exchange. This includes Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, AOL, Outlook.com, and most other Web mail providers. Just configure Apple Mail toaccess your account and then follow the normal SpamSieve setup instructions inthe Setting Up Apple Mail section. SpamSieve will then filter your Web mailwhen Apple Mail is running.

These messages are not spam, so training them as such could confuseSpamSieve. For mailing lists, there should be instructions at the bottom ofthe e-mail to unsubscribe. Social media sites have ways that you canconfigure which types of messages they send you. For other types of unwantedmessages, see you can optionally create a rule in your mail program abovethe SpamSieve rule to move or delete them before SpamSieve sees them.
