We used to use post office travel money cards a lot some years ago before the pandemic. I have got 2 expired cards which will definitely have money in them. Any idea how to go about retrieving this? Or is it lost forever? Thanks!
So we had this.
You need to call them.
There was something they could do easily if they expired less than 2 years ago.
Ours were longer out of date than that and we're being charged a monthly fee as a result. We had to open new ones formally at a post office, with ID etc, and then call them back and they transferred the balances across from old to new. It wasn't difficult but a bit of a pain.
Is there a purpose for prepaid cards anymore? Is it worth me leaving a bunch of currencies on here (with the awareness to use this card on subsequent travels) or is it all dated and best off just using my usual debit cards as I have been doing?
I personally use Revolut for travel money. You can put money on it "as you go" and there's not fee for the first couple hundred euros you take out on atm and you get a card you can use FOC as a debit/credit card. Seeing how most places now accept these (unless you're going somewhere really old school) I would do this. There's different types of accounts you can hold (including a free one) with monthly fees, I often will "upgrade" to a paying one for a few monhs around travel time to get the better perks (more money FOC out of an atm, travel insurance etc) and then once I'm back downgrade back to the free version. You can also immediately remove any remaining funds to your UK bank account. Found the tip online and have used it for past 2 years for holidays in EU, have no complaints really!
The Post Office offers one simple plan, their basic Post Office Travel Money Card. While the travel money card is free to get, there is a minimum load amount of 50 of whichever of the 23 currencies you choose.
Terms such as fee-free, no commission, and zero charges are used a lot by travel money providers, and the Post Office is no different when it comes to marketing their card, which offers 0% commission. But as with most others, there is often a hidden fee under the bonnet. After all, how else would a provider make any money?
A new solution, only offered by Currensea, the UK's best rated travel debit card. Currensea connects via Open Banking to your existing debit card and is accepted anywhere which accepts MasterCard. Plus, Currensea use the best live interbank exchange rate for 16 separate currencies (which is what the banks use between them), this guarantees that you'll receive the best current exchange rate every time you use your card. Plus there are no hidden fees and charges like the Post Office and its even free to get and use.
The Post Office Card Account (POCA) was a cash handling account allowing customers to receive benefit payments. The Card Account could not be accessed anywhere other than a Post Office Counter or ATM at a post office branch. These accounts could only receive Department for Work and Pensions benefit payments and HMRC Tax Credits and Child Benefit payments. Housing Benefit from a local authority for example, must be paid elsewhere. If the account remains dormant for one year, it is closed. These accounts were run by J.P. Morgan Europe Ltd on behalf of the Post Office. To open an account, you must have been in receipt of benefits and a referral is made via Jobcentre Plus. New applications for a Post Office card account were closed on 11 May 2020, with existing accounts remaining open until November 2022. At this point, recipients who are unable to open traditional bank accounts will be moved over to a new Payment Exception Service which will allow them to continue to receive benefits at PayPoint and Post Office outlets using a plastic card, text message or email voucher.[4][5]
Q. I was attracted to the Post Office Travel Money Plus Card after reading on a leaflet that it was "a perfect travel companion". It said the card could be used "wherever MasterCard is accepted".
I bought the card for a motoring holiday. For us the card is not "the perfect travel companion". We feel deceived. Are these restrictions common to all pre-paid cards? To add insult to injury, having used my HSBC Visa credit card to pay for my travel card I was astounded to find I was charged interest for this. MG.
We have had a PO travel money card for a few years and had no problems, either logging in or obtaining money. Since the new app has been installed we cannot log in to our card. Our email address flashes up and then disappears. This situation seems very familiar to another PO system error problem!!! This should not be beyond the wit of competent people to sort out. I have spoken to customer services twice and, so far, nothing has happened. Please sort this problem out.
I booked an exchange for US Dollars on-line and got confirmation that this was ready for collection. When I arrived at the post office in Horley they scanned my QR code then told me there was a problem and gave me a number to ring (0845 301 0100) - I called the number and everything got sorted, however, when I got my mobile phone bill I discovered this is a PREMIUM RATE number. It was only 2.54 but this is an unacceptable SCAM in my view - is this to help pay the Horizon scandal costs?
Just got a card for a trip to Australia, however the exchange rate given appears very poor and does not match what the post office offer for a cash exchange. Worked out that it is cheaper to use my credit card for purchase in Australia.
Hi there, I am sorry to hear this. If you can give us a email at in...@travelmoneycard.co.uk and put your full name, last four digits of your card, and "REF-#32429486" the team can take a further look into this.
I arranged a card at my local post office without difficulty and set it up with 50 Euros. I later added more money for an upcoming trip to Portugal. The card was accepted in shops and restaurants without difficulty and it was easy to confirm the remaining balance by the App although I kept my own running balance. I was very happy with the service.
Hi there, I am sorry to hear this. If you press "Cards", then open the card you wish to top up, the option to top up will be there. Please contact us at "in...@postoffice.travelmoneycard.co.uk if you need further assistance

What is the travel charge card?
The GSA SmartPay 3 program provides charge cards to U.S. government agencies, as well as tribal governments, through master contracts that are negotiated with major banks.
What is the benefit for federal agencies?
Each agency or organization using the travel charge card receives a rebate based on sales volume. The sale refund is remitted to the organization. In addition, a separate refund is provided to agencies and organizations based on improving speed of payment.
How can travel managers make it happen?
In 1988, Congress mandated that federal employees use the government travel charge card for all payments of expenses related to official government travel, with some exceptions.
Travel managers should ensure that all of their travelers use their government-issued travel charge card for all purchases of travel-related services or products such as rental cars, hotel rooms, and telephone or Internet service.
The GSA SmartPay program provides charge cards to U.S. government agencies/departments, as well as tribal governments, through master contracts that are negotiated with major national banks. Additionally, to contact Travel Program call 888-472-5585 or email travel....@gsa.gov
