Hi

More details of Mark Stringers presentation next week can be found at
www.agileyorkshire.org. It sounds like a fascinating exploration into
the heart of what we do every day. We don't have a supporting act yet
for next week so if anyone fancies taking 5 minutes to present on
something they think will be of interest to the group then drop me an
email directly.

Thanks to everyone who made it to the last AgileYorkshire meeting. We
seem to have hit that critical mass whereby we get a steady 20 - 30
people each month with a good mix of regulars and new faces. As always
the presentations sparked off plenty of discussion and generated lots
of good feedback.

The winner of the JetBrains licence (drawn from those who filled in
feedback forms last month) was Christopher Warren who selected a
ReSharper licence.

Some of the feedback focused on the fact that the room is starting to
get a bit cramped for us. We are making plans for next year and if
anyone has any suggestions for a possible alternative pub with a
larger room (available for free) within walking distance from Leeds
station then please drop me a line.

Finally, I think that the website would benefit from a few photos from
AgileYorkshire so if anyone already has any or would like to volunteer
to take some next week then that would be great.

Cheers and see you next week

Neil

Not a pub, but a free venue used in the past by a blogging group I
attend is Old Broadcasting House owned I believe by Leeds Met. It has a
large presentation space with one or more side rooms as well. No bar on
the premises but there are plenty within a few minutes walk.

Just a thought.

Hi

I have a really good contact there. They are keen to become more involved in the Agile community, so this may be a very good idea. It is a bit more of a walk from the town centre, but it is definitely a more salubrious venue.

I will find out what the deal is.

Cheers

Nick.

Hi

The OBH guys are happy to let us use their facility for our Wednesday
sessions. They would look for a small coffee contribution (50p per
cup) and we would need to move on around 9pm ish. Obviously they are
not going to serving us any beer!!!

Shall we pick this up as a discussion topic on Wednesday? There are
lots of pro's and con's to go over...

Nick.

Our last meeting of the year is a special at Old Broadcasting House -
David Joyce and Pete Camfield from the BBC are coming up to describe
what they are doing in the development team around Lean and Kanban.

See http://www.agileyorkshire.org/2009-event-announcements/09Dec2009
for more details.

I think we should discuss possible venues - I like the informal nature
of the evenings at the Victoria and subscribe to the original
intention of the founders of Extreme Tuesday:

"to be in a good pub so at least (in the worst case) if the topic of
the evening was a disaster you could enjoy a pint and some food and
feel that the night was not wasted".

but I think it needs some discussion in view of the increasing
popularity of the club!

Cheers

Neil

I agree with Neil,

The fact that it is at the pub and that there is a chance for a free
pint is very apealing to many people.
Beer fueled bravery helps certain introvert geeks to raise their hands
and ask some questions after the session. It also helps in networking
and more informal contacts with fellow geeks.
Food is very important factor too, as many people come straight from
work and their last meal was lunch.

More formal venues like Old Broadcasting House are really good for
more formal meet-ups, like anti-conferences, community conferences or
even full blown conferences (???) as the venue provides full AV
facilities, exclusivity and few other impotant things that pubs lack
of. I think it would be good for the club to organise something bigger
in the Old Broadcasting House (like some really good and famous
speakers or maybe a community conference) and it is really cool that
December meeting is there. It will give us a chance to see, how well
it suits the club.

If the current venue is getting too small, I think we should scout for
pubs with bigger function rooms in the centre of Leeds and we should
do it as soon as possible, because various societies book such rooms
well in advance.
