Hi,

I've been using ReSharper 4.5 on a trial basis and I've found it really useful so far. I'm considering making a case to my IT Managers (yes, I have 2!) to purchase it for our dev team.

Has anyone else used it? Did you find it a worthwhile tool and do you still use it now?

Thanks

Matt

Hi

We use Resharper and dotTrace from JetBrains. Resharper is a great productivity tool. It really reduces the amount of searching and typing you have to do in Visual Studio. I know the Masternaut guys use it a lot also. For the small license cost, I reckon you get your money back pretty quick.

dotTrace is also great. We have been doing a lot of profiling over the last few weeks. Had we not had dotTrace, we would have spent those weeks doing performance improvements in the wrong areas! The slow areas of our app turned out to not be what we initially thought they would be!

Cheers

Nick.

I use, and recommend it, but; it should be noted it does use a lot of memory!

I stopped using it because it was a bit winy about using var instead of
using an explicit type. As I am doing a project aimed squarely at .NET 2
only (a powershell project) I can't use the var keyword. I tried
switching it off but it kept persisting and wouldn't shut up about it.
Seems odd that it couldn't figure it out for iteself given that you
specify which VM you are targeting inside a VS2008 project or solution
or whatever.

If you are targeting .NET 3.5 I don't suppose that will be a problem.

Hi All,

We use it at Masternaut and I use it at home... absolutley invaluable.  As Nick says, its a real timesaver and can help you to neaten up you coding style.  Take a little time to learn some of its features and the keyboard shortcuts and you'll really fly.

Yes, it does nag you about certain coding styles but they can all be customised to suit your own preferences.  I also hated it nagging about using 'var'... (much less readable code IMHO) so I changed the code inspection options to stop it doing that.

Makes refactoring a doddle... I thoroughly recommend it!

Can I have my free license now JetBrains??! :)

Yeah,

As most of the other people here said I'd whole heartedly recommend it
- I struggle not using it now, coding seems slow by comparison :-)

Learn the features and tailor the inspection options to your preferred
style and it pretty much stays out of the way.

My only complaint with ReSharper is some of the dialog / hint boxes
get in the way so you can't see what your actually trying to type
underneath. You could also have a look at ReFactorPro by DevExpress -
I've not used it for a while but I preferred its dialogs to ReSharper,
they stayed out of the way a little more.

Of course, as Neil D said - if JetBrains happened to have a free
license going spare I'm sure I could play with it a little more and
get used to them ;-)

We have used the DevExpress tools for a while now and been happy with
them. When I compared them with Resharper (over a year ago now) I
found the DevExpress tools less resouce hungry so more suited to
working in a Virtual PC, a key requirement for us.
