Top challenges in software development:
- having bosses who know nothing about software engineering
- having all the other organization units totally disconnected from the software-development team and its way of working
- command-and-control from top-down management who knows nothing about software engineering
- fixed-cost contracts
- disengaged programmers who are looking for a break to fast-track to become some sort of manager.

Top 5 challenges in using Agile:
- Dispassionate developers and managers who have no interest in advancing the field of software development for the business;
- Rigid mindset
- Fear
- Lack of innovation and intra- or entre-preneurship.
- No common sense

with all the Citrep-supported PMP courses in Singapore there should be no end of people who know the difference between a development project and a deployment project (and how the 2 should be managed differently)....

Hola Duncan,

I'm not quite sure what you mean :) Could you clarify it?

Thanks!

Bas

Thanks Bas for pointing out that I'm being too subtle again ;)

There are qualitative differences between development projects and deployment projects - experience and anecdote (in lieu of me going to find some quantitative references) tell me that most managers and project managers only think in terms of deployment projects and apply the understanding of deployment projects to (software) development projects.

There are lots of Citrep-supported PMP courses in Singapore - or at least my e-mail inbox has that impression - and PMBOK is supposed to be a flexible smorgasbord of project administration practices.  I would hope (as I've not attended a PMP course) that the trainers do tell people about the differences between development and deployment projects (and that one should choose from different parts of the PMBOK accordingly).

Which of course refers to the challenge of fixed-cost (sic) contracts - surely that should be fixed-price as we know that the costs vary?  It also touches on management not knowing about software engineering, and by extension development projects as opposed to deployment projects.
